I NEWS I Police Search For Jewish Gang "THE MOST WONDERFUL FACE LEFT TO US . ." (so said sculptor George Grey Bernard 1863 1938) - Sculptor Leonard Wells Volk learned his craft in New York and settled in Illinois after marrying a cousin of Stephen Douglas, who gave Volk the funds to study in Rome in the mid-1850s. On his return Volk set up a studio in Chicago where he first met ABRAHAM LINCOLN in 1858 during Lincoln's historic debates with Doublas. At that time, Lincoln proomised to sit one day for Volk, but it would be almost two years before they met again. In April 1860, Volk noticed a newspaper article announcing Lincoln's arrival in town to argue a case. Volk went to the courthouse and reminded Lincoln of his old promise. Lincoln readily agreed to begin sitting, and paid a visit to Volk's studio each morning for a week. If he could take a mask of Lincoln's face, Volk explained, the number of visits would be greatly reduced. Lincoln agreed. The sittings continued for five days after the mask was prepared, Lincoln entertaining Volk with "SOME OF THE FUNNIEST AND MOST LAUGHABLE OF STORIES." We know that Volk took several original castings of the mask, one of which was given to Gideon Welles, Lincoln's Secretary of the Navy, another to the Smithsonian Institute. While on tour in Europe Volk's studio, the mask and all other original castings were believed destroyed by the Great Chicago fire. I have recently acquired the original casting which was formerly the property of the descendents of Gideon Wells. Without damage to the original, I have had a mold produced and am preparing a limited edition bronze casting for a select few collectors. These bronze examples of the original ABRAHAM LINCOLN life mask measures 10"x8x51/4" and are presented on a base of beautifully finished Teak with Volk's description of the session inscribed. Police are searching for the gang they believe stole the van used by the terrorist to plough into the crowd. The suspect, Rateb Ab- dallah Zaidan, 25, of the West Bank village of Kibya, is in custody. The fatally injured men were buried last week with full military honors. Regi- mental Sgt. Maj. Aharon Kalzoni-Agmon, 36, of Givatayim, was interred at the Givat Shaul cemetery in Tel Aviv. Sgt. Shmuel Michaeli, 21, of Bnei Brak was buried in the military section of the Holon cemetery. Eight other soldiers re- mained hospitalized, two in serious condition. The incident occurred at a hitchhikers' shelter on the Geha Road outside Tel Aviv, where soldiers wait to pick up rides. About 15 were standing in line when a van belonging to the Bezek Tele- communications Co. ran a red light and was driven into their midst at high speed. The van demolished the shelter and overturned. The slightly injured driver crawled out of a window and tried to escape. He was chas- ed and overpowered by witnesses, who turned him over to a senior police officer who happened to be driving by. The suspect's home in Kibya was sealed off by security forces. Mr. Zaidan reportedly left a suicide note under his mat- tress saying he planned to "take revenge on the Jews for my relatives killed in the intifada and on the Temple Mount." According to police in- vestigators, none of his relatives have been killed, either in the intifada or the Temple Mount riots on Oct. 8, 1990. Police said the suspect's wife tried to destroy the note when they came to question her. The rich variety of Israel's flora and fauna reflects its location at the junction of three continents. Over 400 species of birds, 200 species of mammals and reptiles and 3,000 varieties of plants are found within its borders.
