people — provided a startling
image of Soviet Jewish life
today.
Astounding numbers tell
the story of Jews in the
USSR. One half of Kiev's
nearly 200,000 JeWs have
emigrated. One third of
Zhitomir's 30,000 Jews re-
main and are themselves in
the process of leaving.
Rabbi Yakov Bleich in Kiev
is part of a network of Karlin-
Stolin Chasidim in the
western Ukraine. Their im-
pact is breathtaking. . Last
Passover, 1,500 people attend-
ed his seder; 57 tons of matzo
were distributed; 300
students are now enrolled in
his synagogue's day school.
During the course of the sum-
mer, 500 campers par-
ticipated in two sessions
located at three different sites
surrounding Kiev.
A number of organizations,
religious and secular, private-
ly funded or part of the
organized Jewish world, are
directing such activities. For
example, Moscow's main syn-
agogue is establishing a
number of yeshivot supported
by Canadian billionaire
Albert Reichman.
Lvov's Jewish cultural
society has organized a host
of programs: Yiddish studies,
Hebrew and Jewish history
courses. At the community's
Israeli folk dance group, Rus-
sian and American Jewish
teen-agers, who could barely
understand one another, sang
and danced for hours — more
profound testimony to the
eternity of the Jewish people
and its ability to prevail over
its adversaries than any
analysis of the deficiencies of
Soviet power.

(emissaries) from Israel free-
ly operate in cities
throughout the USSR as they
do in other parts of the world.
They promote the study of
Israel, Zionism, Hebrew and
encourage aliyah.

B'nei Akiva
(military service) yeshiva
students are conducting a
wide range of Jewish study
courses. They often encounter
dramatic responses. One
young man from Ashdod
reports how a Jewish man ap-
proached him soon after his
arrival in Kiev, asking mere-
ly to touch a siddur. Another
just wanted to watch him
pray.
The Soviet Union has
become an open society. In-
dividuals do not hesitate to
voice their opinions (positive
or negative) regarding any
facet of their country. Jews
