radical activity in Israel was
on the left."
But the Yom Kippur frac-
tured Israel's sense of invin-
cibility, and the problems of
administering territories
filled with angry Arabs gave
right-wing extremists in
Israel a new momentum.
He said the Israeli right
emerged from the shadows
in 1984 with revelations
about Jewish activists who
had plotted to destroy the
Muslim mosques on the
Temple Mount — and the
election of Rabbi Meir
Kahane to the Knesset.
"So I started concentrating
on the theme of the radical
right," he said. "It took me
six years to finish the book
— by which time they had
penetrated the Israeli
government."
How will the new
legitimacy of Israel's radical
right affect the upcoming
Middle East peace con-
ference?
"It took (Prime Minister
Yitzhak) Shamir con-
siderable effort to pacify his
radical right partners before
he could satisfy Mr. (James)
Baker," the U.S. Secretary
of State, Mr. Sprinzak said.
"When (Shamir) says he
won't trade land for peace,
this is part of the commit-
ment he has made. There are
things he simply can't do,
whether he wants to or not."
He is "a prime minister
under house arrest."
As a result, Mr. Sprinzak
is not optimistic about the
upcoming peace conference
that was to be the first step
toward face-to-face negotia-
tions between Israel and its
Arab neighbors.
"My wishful thinking is
very excited about the con-
vening of the peace con-
ference," he said. "But from
a professional point of view,
I am pessimistic. Shamir has
committed himself to no
land for peace; that is not a
bargaining chip. So I do not
see any way to bridge the
gap." 0

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
number of Palestinians de-
tained by Israeli security
forces in the administered
territories has dropped
sharply in recent months,
senior military sources re-
ported last week.
The decrease was at-
tributed to a general
weariness among the Pales-
tinian population and a cor-
responding decline of in-
tifada-related activities.
