Chairman, Tribute Committee THE ZIONIST ORGANIZATION OF AMERICA Metropolitan Detroit District ROBERT SOSNICK Co-Chairmen thing to do; it makes it a necessity. Abraham and Sarah's journey is more than just a metaphor for our own physical travels, it also ap- plies to our spiritual quests as well. Human beings are not ask- ed to do more than their capacity. They are asked, however, to achieve what they are capable of achieving. Abraham's journey is more than just a metaphor, it also refers to the actual physical trip to the land of Israel. Rab- bi Nachman of Brats] av com- ments, "There are people who say to themselves that they love the land of Israel and desire to go up to it in com- fort, not in oppression and sadness. "This is a false desire, for whoever wants to go up to the land of Israel needs to go, even by foot or through great effort, just as God said to Abraham, `lech lecha' — an actual walk, by foot, with all of the tribulations of travel?' Today, more than ever we witness the fulfillment of these words, as our brothers and sisters from Ethiopia and the Soviet Union have travel- ed and continue to travel in the footsteps of Abraham to the land of Israel. The difficulties encountered by ohm today are probably quite similar to the culture shock experienced by Abraham millenia ago. Re- cent archeological discoveries have given us a new and dif- ferent picture of Ur of the Chaldees, Abraham's native land. Ur was a powerful, pro- sperous capital of a highly developed civilization. It is quite likely that Abraham grew up in a large two-story villa constructed of brick, with all of the comfort of home; a paved floor, a large reception room and spacious living quarters. Abraham gave up all of this, as well as his own culture, for a tent and nomadic existence. We are the descendants of Abraham, following the steps of his journey. We understand and take part in that quest in a variety of different ways, all of them very real and true to the lives we lead. Some of us identify with Abraham when our lives take us away from friends and family, while others see themselves in Abraham's shoes as they travel within. Still others find themselves following his path as they journey into a Promised Land. May all of us be granted the wisdom and strength to com- plete our quests. ❑ THE MOST EAGERLY AWAITED MUSICAL EVENT OF THE FALL SEASON PLAN NOW TO ATTEND: Sunday, November 3, 1991, 7:30 p.m..
