difficult to do that in real-

"To some extent, all ethnic
groups depend for their
sustenance on their mother
country," said Eileen Sobel,
who co-chairs a Ukrainian-
Jewish-Polish dialogue
group in Detroit. "Israel
does serve as a nurturer of
some Jewish values."
Now, with Ukrainian-
Americans finding them-
selves shoved to the side by
events going on in the
motherland, they are hoping
that past commitment to a
political goal will yield fruits
unseen.
"Hopefully, it will be
mutually rewarding," said
Mrs. Sobel.
Right now, it is difficult to
say. Independence is still not
a settled issue. But like the
Jewish community, Ukrai-
nians have vested their
community's identity in two
major institutions: the
Church and the family. In
both, Ukrainian leaders
hope, lies the Ukraine's
future.
"Maybe I'm old-
fashioned," said Mr.
Berezowsky. "Maybe there's
a reason why God gave us all
these languages and cul-
tures." 0

Mayor Battles
Over Housing

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Tel
Aviv's maverick Likud
mayor, Shlomo Lahat, has
openly defied a powerful
member of his own party,
Housing Minister Ariel Sha-
ron.
Mr. Lahat announced his
decision not to connect the
municipal water supply to
the temporary mobile homes
that he says Mr. Sharon
planted in a south Tel Aviv
slum district without getting
a license and in disregard of
opposition from the mayor
and City Council.
The mayor, who is accoun-
table to the voters who elect
him, not his party, said he
was all for housing immi-
grants in Tel Aviv. "Indeed,
the city has probably done
more for immigrant housing
and integration than most
other cities," he told
reporters last week.
"But what I want for the
newcomers is permanent
housing and good facilities,"
the mayor said. "They
shouldn't be dumped in
small caravans for a year or
so and then moved off
somewhere else, with the
caravans degenerating into
slum areas."
