J
n avalanche of at-
tacking distortions
about Israel's current
negotiations on the planned
peace conference creates
depressing concern about
Israel's relationships, espe-
cially with the United
States. One senses evidence
of deplorable prejudice.
When one prominent
periodical, the Manchester
Guardian, goes so deep into
an effort to arouse hatred by
calling Israel's request for
humanitarian aid "bribery",
the concern over media anti-
Israelism is all the more
shocking.
The multiplying injustices
do not suppress the Jewish
duty of rescuing the oppress-
ed. Keeping Israel's doors
open to the escapees from
many lands of oppression
continues the responsibility
of all of us and demands
support and encouragement
from the non-Jewish world
as well.
Operation Exodus from the
Soviet Union continues. The
sensational rescue of Jews
from Ethiopia will remain
an important chapter in
human endeavor. The Alba-
nian Jewish transfer from
indignity to the freedom of
Israel is another heartening
rescue task. Now comes the
responsibility of providing
security for the Jews to be
saved from the dangers in
Yugoslavia. This new
chapter demands action by
Jews everywhere under the
leadership of Israel in the
role of rescuer in times of
crisis. The emerging demand
for action is revealed in a
Jewish Telegraphic Agency
account of contingency plans
already presented by Uri
Gordon, head of the Jewish
Agency's Immigration
Department. Jewish
movements engaged in sav-
ing and protecting Jews are
already enlisting support.
The increasing respon-
sibilities involving
Yugoslavia demand Jewish
action with hoped for global
support. The JTA report
must be read into our
records:
Yugoslavia is in the
throes of civil war. Fighting
has been especially fierce
in the secession-minded
republic of Croatia, home
to about 2,000 Jews, most
of whom live in the capital,
Zagreb, Uri Gordon
reported.
He estimated the total
Jewish population of
Yugoslavia to be about
5,500 of whom 1,500 live in
the national capital,
Belgrade; 1,200 in Zagreb;
and 1,300 in Sarajevo,
capital of the province of
Bosnia-Hercegovina.
He said Jewish Agency
emissaries have gone to
Yugoslavia in recent
months to observe the con-
dition of the Jewish
population. One is at the
moment in the area of the
fighting, he said.
In New York, Michael
Schneider, executive vice
president of the American
Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee, confirmed that
the Jewish Agency has
made plans to evacuate the
Yugoslav Jewish communi-
ty, if necessary .. .
He said JDC officials
have also made ar-
rangements with Jewish
communities in neighbor-
ing Hungary, Austria and
Italy to temporarily house
Jews fleeing unrest in
Yugoslavia.
JDC, meanwhile, has
allocated emergency funds
to provide additional
medicine and food to the
Yugoslav community if the
fighting worsens. Regular
aid to the Jewish com-
munity of Croatia, which
normally goes through
Belgrade, is now being pro-
vided directly to the Jews
of Zagreb, Schneider said.
He also said JDC staff
have helped beef up securi-
ty and otherwise fortify the
Jewish Old Age Home in
Zagreb, which also houses
the local synagogue ...
Mr. Gordon, of the
Jewish Agency, described
the Yugoslav Jewish com-
munity as middle- and
lower-middle-class families
who live in an impoverish-
ed country on the verge of
bankruptcy .. .
He said the Jewish Agen-
cy and Israel are prepared
to help all Jews who wish
to leave their countries and
come to Israel.
Such conditions represent
the increasing world-wide
Jewish responsibilities. The
commitments will grow with
every such exodus. There
will be a continuing need for
housing and employment for
newcomers to Israel. There
will be need for loans from
friendly countries, and the
United States is always the
friendliest. Therefore, the
humanitarian program that
spells out Israel's role in
mankind continues
regardless of the prejudices.
Humanitarianism will con-
tinue as our commitment to
fellow Jews.
We plead for cooperation
from fellow humans every-
where. Let there be an end to
injustice and a beginning to
a global policy of freedom
under genuine liber-
tarianism for all. ❑
Education:
Less Learning?
An admonition to our
community that a revolu-
tionary trend in educational
programming that may
become a reality is contained
— of all places — in an in-
vitation to a musical pro-
gram. It commences with a
message to members from
the Women's Auxiliary of
the United Hebrew Schools.
The invitation is to a pro-
gram to be held on Oct. 30 at
the UHS building. It begins
with this prediction of an-
ticipated planning for our
community's major educa-
tional agency:
At this time the educa-
tional system of the
United Hebrew Schools is
undergoing an in-depth
review. Upon conclusion
of this study there is a
possibility the United
Hebrew Schools division
(elementary schools) will
be -31imhated. Thus there
wig rte) longer be any
elementary students for
our organization to ser-
vice.
In lieu of our traditional
Donor event, and in ap-
preciation of your con-
tinued loyalty, we are in-
viting you to join us for a
special musical matinee.
The seriousness of what is
revealed as the possibility of
new educational trends
should, in all fairness, be
treated as evolutionary with
all efforts made to avoid
revolutionary. Therefore, the
need to retain the recogni-
tion that has always been
accorded to the 70-year-old
United Hebrew Schools.
It is under this respected
name that the following
brief record of commitments
and achievements will now
beg for our community's
consideration.
From the creation of the
United Hebrew Schools, we
had the recognized five-days-
