Come Celebrate.•...• Religious Freedom To Receive Push Capitol Hill has been preoccupied with the dra- matic Clarence Thomas hearings, and Jewish groups have focused on little else but the continuing fallout from the loan guarantee fiasco. So it is hardly surprising that a number of issues have been lost in the shuffle — in- cluding the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, a top priority for a wide range of Jewish groups. Several Jewish activists are participating in an effort to bring the bill, which would reverse a Supreme Court decision in the so- called "peyote case," back into the legislative limelight. Judy Golub, legislative di- rector for the American Jew- ish Committee, and Rabbi David Saperstein, director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, are or- ganizing a "lobby day" to turn up the heat on a Con- gress that has been too busy to focus much attention on the religious freedom mea- sure. "We've been focusing a lot on mobilizing grass roots support for the bill," Ms. Golub said. "Now it's time to go back to Congress." The measure currently has 106 co-sponsors and is sup- ported by a wide range of re- ligious groups, including organizations representing just about every point on the Jewish spectrum. Recently, the Mormon Church became an active member of the religious lib- erties coalition, marking the first time the church has become involved in a major legislative coalition. • Jewish Democrats Plan For New York The National Jewish Democratic Council, the group dedicated to cemen- ting the traditional bond between Jews and the Dem- ocratic Party, is getting is organized fOr next year's party extravaganza in New York. The group's executive council met recently and decided to expand its ranks. Added were Robert Rose, an investment banker in New York, and Geri Palast, a union official in Washing- ton. Mr. Rose's appointment was significant because he is also on the host committee for the Democratic conven- tion.
