Couple Wants
To Alter Stone

Jerusalem (JTA) — An Or-
thodox couple has petitioned
the High Court of Justice to
order the army to allow
them to alter the gravestone
of their son, buried in the

military cemetery in Haifa.
Aviezer and Rachel Cohen
of Haifa want permission to
carve the Hebrew letters
heh, yod, daled (H-Y-D) on
> the headstone. The acrostic
stands for the words
\ 2 "Hashem
,,
Yikom Damo"
(May God Avenge His
Death).
According to Jewish tradi-
tion, it is inscribed on the
> tombstones of Jews who
have met a violent death at
the hands of enemies.
The Cohens' son, David,
died in the Lebanon war. He
was a student at a hesder
yeshiva, where military ser-
vice is combined with re-
/-) ligious
• -
studies.
The Israel Defense Force
refused their request on the
basis of its longstanding
policy to preserve the
uniformity of tombstones in
IDF cemeteries and in the
military sections of civilian
cemeteries.
The Cohens contend the
principle of uniformity is not
always applied. They cite
the High Court's support of
the right of bereaved parents
to engrave the Gregorian
calender dates on the stone
of their son alongside the
Hebrew calendar dates.
In addition, they note that
some of the military dead
are referred to as "son" or
"brother" on their stones,
while others have no
> designation.
Finally, the parents
charged in their petition to
the court, the civilian
chairman of the IDF corn-
mittee that turned down
their request had said he
opposed it because it repre-
sented a political statement
to him.

Cost Of Living
Up In Israel

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's
cost of living edged up an-
other 1.6 percent in
September, the Central Bu-
reau of Statistics reported.
At that rate, inflation for
the year will be between 21
and 23 percent, the report
said.
Rising housing costs led the
price index up.
The statistics bureau said
an average family of four
now requires a monthly in-
come of at least $1,417 to
make ends meet.
