When your community is Grand Rapids and its Jews are a small minority, it's sometimes good to feel the ' strength that can be drawn from other Jewish numbers across the state. That's exactly what the Michigan Jewish Conference wanted to accomplish when it started over a year ago. Nowhere was the across-the- state strength more visible than in East Lansing Tues- day night when Governor John Engler addressed some 170 represenatives at the conference's first anniver- sary reception. Governor Engler stressed the importance of the state's Jewish community and the contributions it makes day- to-day. He also said that it was important for a group such as the conference to ex- ist to combat what seems to be a rising incidence of hate and anti-Semitism across the country. "The voice of this con- ference is strong and impor- tant to me," said Gov. Engler. "I'm listening to that voice. It's a group that is looking for a way to pro- vide. services for the state- wide Jewish community. As you return to your corn- munities, please remember again that I hear what you are saying." President Ralph J. Gerson said the organization's goal will be to continue increas- ing awareness among state officials of the conference. He added it was important for the Jewish community around the state to be organized. Mrs. Shapiro, chairman of the women's division of the Jewish Community Fund of Grand Rapids, said five years ago it was difficult for Grand Rapids' Jews to stand up and be counted in the. It was important for the conference to combat what seems to be a rising incidence of hate and anti-Semitism. Governor Engler city, which is known for its conservative politics. Now, she said, that has changed. "Jews here in Michigan are willing to be counted," she said. "There's no need to have a low profile anymore.
