that nobody cares about br-
inging these people to justice
— or to honor those who died
as martyrs."
Congress, she said, has
been only slightly more
responsive to the grief of the
families.
Only a few legislators have
listened to the cries of the
families, she said — in-
cluding Sen. Alfonse
D'Amato, R- N.Y., and Rep.
Charles Grassley, R-Iowa.
Ms. Cohen also pointed to
the efforts of Rep. Edward F.
Feighan, D-Ohio, who is
sponsoring legislation that
would allow the victims of
terrorism to sue terrorists in
a civil court. •
Ms. Cohen also had harsh
words for Jewish organiza-
tions that did not want to get
involved in the efforts of the
victim families.
"When this happened, I
tried to reach the Jewish
organizations," she said. "I
want you to know that I had
the worst treatment. I had
hoped for some help; this
was a young Jewish woman
who was murdered. I wanted
them to help us reach the
media. But I had to do it by
myself. I consider that to be
an absolute scandal."
Recently, the Anti-
Defamation League has
been offering assistance to
the group of families. Ms.
Cohen also pointed to the
efforts of the controversial
New York Jewish activist,
Rabbi Avi Weiss.
Ms. Cohen went to great
lengths last week to point
out that terrorism is not just
a "Jewish issue," and that
the families affected by ter-
rorism represent cross-
section of the American
population.
"I'm Jewish," she said,
"but it's very important that
this not be viewed as an
issue about Jews, about
Israel, because it isn't; it's
about American citizens who
have died because they were
Americans." ❑

Bonn (YrA) — Israel will
have to release all Arab de-
tainees from its prisons if
Westerners held hostage by
pro-Iranian groups in Leb-
anon are to be freed, the
visiting Syrian foreign min-
ister, Farouk a-Sharaa, told
reporters here last week.
He said his country hoped
Israel would comply for hu-
manitarian reasons. But he
denied Syria was making a
resolution of the hostage
situation dependent on what
Israel does.
