Larry King
Continued from preceding page
Mr. King said. "He answers
in one-word answers. He's
not a forthcoming person .. .
He drives you crazy. He'll
say things like, 'Acting is
easy.' I asked him what he
thought of Dustin Hoffman,
and he said he's never seen
him . I couldn't tell
whether he was putting me
on."
And what does the man
who has personally known
five presidents think about
George Bush?
"Personally, I like him a
lot," Mr. King said. "But I
don't think he has a do-
mestic program. I don't
think we have a good wel-
fare program in this country.
I think the failure to have a
national health insurance is
almost beyond defense .. .
So, on 10 major issues, I
would disagree with George
Bush on seven or eight. And
he knows that. We're
friends."
Mr. King also has high
regard for Dan Quayle, call-
ing the vice president "a
better friend to Israel than
anyone else in the present
administration."
"Quayle likes Israel's
toughness," Mr. King said.
"I was at Quayle's house
when he had a luncheon for
Shamir, and I think Shamir
likes him, too."
Despite his friendship with
many top policy-makers in
Washington — and many of
his other guests — Mr. King
said he never lets his per-
sonal opinions affect his
interviewing.
"When I do an interview,
I'm fair; you should not
know what my politics are,"
he said. "Now, if you listen
to me do open phones on the
radio — when I'm just
taking calls and people ask
my opinion — I always give
it."
One topic Mr. King is
happy to give his opinion
about is Israeli politics.
"Generally, I do not like
right-wingers or hardliners,"
Mr. King said. "And while I
understand Israel's plight and
certainly support her, I'm
always going to say what I
feel."
"Never in my broadcasting
life have I been told who to
interview, what to ask, what
not to ask," Mr. King ex-
plained. "So, I can say exact-
ly what I want."
As for his Judaism, Mr.
King claims it is "everything
and nothing" to him.
"I don't go to synagogue,
except on the High Holy
Days, and I do that out of
respect for my parents and
also on the chance that there
is somebody up there wat-
