offers. The need is growing,
and we're growing to meet
it."
The new building is leased,
said Mr. Dembs, and Yad
Ezra has sufficient funds to
initiate the move.
A fund-raiser for Yad Ezra
will be held Nov. 17 at Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses
where Rabbi Schnipper will
be honored for his contribu-
tions. "We have enough to
carry us for a little while,"
Mr. Dembs said, "but we'll
be needing to raise more
money."
Phil Elkus of Farmington
Hills has been volunteering
at Yad Ezra for more than a
year. Mr. Elkus remembers
his mother receiving money
for Passover when he was a
little boy growing up in Cin-
cinnati.
"It was the 1930s, and my
father died," said Mr. Elkus,
a former Levi's salesman.
"My mother was reluctant to
take the money, but she had
no other choice."
Mr. Elkus said it was im-
portant for him to give some-
thing back. "There's no
other feeling like it," he
said. "Coming here has
changed my whole outlook
on life."
It's changed Sara's outlook
too.
"I don't mind coming to
Yad Ezra as much as I used
to," she said. "I still don't
tell my husband because he
has enough to worry about,
but the staff and volunteers
at Yad Ezra make everyone
feel it's natural to be here. It
helps that there are so many
others here."
Sara now has a social
worker from Jewish Family
Service to talk to. "It's nice
knowing I have someone
who will let me cry and
scream until I feel better." 0
