Some Spartan-Wolverine 'intermarriages take the
friendly rivalry beyond tomorrow's big game.

hat do you get when
you mix Spartan
green with
Wolverine blue? The War of
the Roses, Part II.
On the eve of Michigan's
most important football
game of the year, local
couples with split
allegiances draw lines of
death in their living rooms.
Of course, it isn't always
that serious. In fact, these
spirited alums regard the
U-M - MSU game tomorrow
as a source for "friendly
rivalry."
"It's a lot of fun," said
Susan Warshay, who hails
from U-M and now lives in
Cleveland. Ms. Warshay's
husband, Jay Ross, is so
Spartan that he yelled "Go
State" at the reception after
their wedding. "We tease
each other a lot about it. It

gives us something neutral
to argue about," she said.
Ms. Warshay and Mr. Ross
were fixed up by friends, but
the rivalry manifested itself
on their first date. She wore
green; he wore blue. "It was
kind of ironic," she said.
Now, four months since
their wedding, comes the

first big test. Is Ms. Warshay
worried?
"No. We're just going to
crush them this year."
Ms. Warshay's optimism is
well-grounded. MSU is hav-
ing its worst season in years,
while U-M is looking at a
Big Ten championship and
could possibly sneak in as a
national champion.

Irwin and Barbara Alpern
have carried on the rivalry
for more than 30 years. She,
from U-M, has stoked the
fire by giving her husband,
as gifts, various MSU
paraphernalia. They've both
got sweaters, cowboy hats,
flags, magnets and many
other tell-tale signs of fan-
dom.
Irwin concedes Barbara's
the bigger football fan, but
that hasn't intimidated him.
In fact, he has twice traveled
on U-M alumni trips to the
Rose Bowl, sporting green
and white clothes.

Another couple, Mitch and
Sari Cicureo, married one
month ago. Now on their
honeymoon in Greece, the
two football fanatics — she
from MSU, he from U-M —
scheduled their flight back
so they could catch the
game. Their flight is suppos-
ed to come into Pittsburgh at
3 p.m. tomorrow, so they'll
