Are Untouched

Bonn (JTA) — Neo-Nazi
attacks on foreigners all
over Germany continued
with increasing fury this
week, as leading politicians
urged the public to condemn
what they called the worst
racial violence since the
Third Reich.
The targets so far have
been mainly Asian, African
and other asylum-seekers or
guest workers, who have
been beaten in the streets
and the hostels they live in
set on fire by arsonists.
Jewish centers and com-
munity buildings, heavily
guarded for years, have been
untouched so far. Jewish
community leaders have
roundly condemned the
violence and called on polit-
ical and social organizations
to find ways to curb the
hatred.
The attacks last week were
the most widespread. • They
challenged the notion that
xenophobic violence is large-
ly the product of the former
East German Communist
regime's failure to acknowl-
edge the Nazi past.
While most neo-Nazi ac-
tivity seemed to occur in
former East Germany after
unification a year ago, the
worst attack in recent days
was in the federal state of
North Rhine-Westphalia, in
former West Germany,
where two Arab children
were badly burned in a fire
set by arsonists.
In Hoyerswerda, a town
near the eastern border with
Poland, the local authorities
bowed to mob violence and
evacuated foreigners from a
hostel.
The events there a week
ago were especially disturb-
ing, inasmuch as neo-Nazi
activists who clashed with
the police were cheered on
by local citizens.
At a conference in Berlin
on racist violence, author
Stephan Hermlin compared
the recent events to the first
assaults on Jews by Hitler's
Brownshirts 60 years ago.
According to Mr. Hermlin,
the new political culture
emerging in united Ger-
many is becoming nation-
alistic and filled with hatred
toward anything perceived
as non-German.
He noted that a town in
the federal state of
Brandenburg, in the former
East Germany, renamed a
street long named for the
Jewish-born German poet
Heinrich Heine, whose
books were burned by the
Nazis even though he had
converted to Protestantism
