Sinai To Study
Ophthalmic Laser

Sinai Hospital will begin a
two-year clinical trial to
evaluate a new ophthalmic
laser, designed to correct the
vision of nearsighted adult
patients.
The Detroit-based hospital
is seeking adult volunteers
for the free study, which
utilizes a state-of-the-art
laser, the VISX 20/20 Ex-
cimer Laser, to re-shape the
cornea to correct myopia
(nearsightedness), astigma-
tism and irregular corneal
surfaces.
The trial will be directed by
Drs. Hugh Beckman, chair-
man of ophthalmology at
Sinai, and Sinai ophthal-
mologists Alan Spigelman
and William Albert.
Utilizing the Excimer laser,
the procedure gradually
changes the irregular shape
of the nearsighted patient's
cornea through photoabla-
tion, which removes a pattern
of tissue in the target area
without heat.
With anesthesia on the eye,

patients are awake during
the laser operation and feel
no pain.
The study will determine
the effectiveness of the Ex-
cimer laser and this pro-
cedure and what if any side
effects occur following the
surgery. Volunteers for the
study must be over the age of
21 who are nearsighted with
astigmatism.
A free, public forum on the
clinical trial will be held at
Sinai Hospital's Zuckerman
Auditorium, 7 p.m. Oct. 21.
Interested volunteers will be
shown a videotape describing
the procedure. Sinai ophthal-
mologists will be on hand to
explain the study.
Volunteers must bring to
the evening program their
most recent prescription
glasses for evaluation by
Sinai physicians. Reserva-
tions for the forum are sug-
gested and may be made by
calling the Sinai Vision
Rehabilitation Institute,
493-5514.
