error in the vote count," she
said. "I found out I'd won by
64 votes."
Mrs. Robinson said the los-
ing candidate left town on
vacation and couldn't be
notified until 10 days later.
After almost 30 years, the
Robinsons still feel strongly
about the vitality and future
of Southfield. They raised
their children in Southfield
and last month became first-
time grandparents of twin
girls.
"When we moved to
Southfield, the area was just
starting to boom," Mrs.
Robinson said. "It wasn't
really a city yet. But we
chose Southfield because of
the quality of the schools
and because of its proximity
to Eli's work."
Mr. Robinson believes
Southfield is the center of
the Jewish community.
"I was very disappointed
the Jewish Federation
decided against Southfield
for its next location," he
said. "I believe that sends
the wrong message to the
rest of the Jewish commun-
ity. As people migrate fur-
ther and further, they create
another diaspora."
Mr. Robinson complains
that every time the Jewish
community moves, it places
an unfair financial and
moral burden on those left
behind.
"I believe people have a
social responsibility to their
communities," he said. "Do
you realize the cost of replac-
ing institutions and in-
frastructures every time the
community picks up and
leaves? Don't we have a
moral obligation to others,
or is this just a jungle?"
Mrs. Robinson is as com-
mitted to Southfield and is
especially proud of
Southfield's educational
record, with more than 90
percent of students choosing
higher education. She is also
excited by the appointment
of the new school super-
intendent, Marlene Davis.
"With new leadership
there are always new oppor-
tunities," Mrs. Robinson
said. "We're always looking
to find better ways to make
students more productive
and creative."
Mrs. Robinson believes in
Southfield's holistic educa-
tional philosophy, which be-
lieves in combining subjects
such as math and science
and English and history or
social studies.
"I'm grateful I have a plat-
form," Mrs. Robinson said.
"I've been on both sides, as a
teacher and now as a
policymaker." Robert
Wright, former director of

Eli Robinson:
City councilman.

St. Peter's Home for Boys in
Detroit and fellow school
board member for 16 years,
credits Mrs. Robinson for
seeing a Holocaust cur-
riculum implemented at
Southfield and Southfield-
Lathrup high schools.
"It's now a national cur-
riculum, and I doubt it
would have gotten that far
without Zelda Robinson,"
said Mr. Wright, a former
social worker. "The thing
about Zelda is that she is
very constant in her com-
mitment."
Mr. Wright described the
Robinsons as a "gracious
couple" and even though
their issues sometimes
overlap, "they never let it in-
terfere with their private life."
"They're committed to
each other and to what they
do," Mr. Wright said. "Eli,
especially, has an optimism
about him. Whenever things
are tough, he hangs in
there."
"If you stop trying to
make a difference, it's time
to get out," Mr. Robinson
said. "If you can make a dif-
ference and leave something
behind, that's the greatest
legacy." ❑
