FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1991

New

Award
Winning
Restaurant .. .
in Novi

43317 Grand River &
Novi Rd. 349 1438

-

hen he was brought
out to the seemingly
"No Mans Land"
back in 1986, Noah Lambert
'thought the gent showing
him a restaurant site was off
his rocker.
Hardly any cars around .. .
and a lot of barren land as
Noah furrowed his eyebrows.
They finally came to what
had originally been an old
dairy farm owned by William
Scripps, son of the founder of
Detroit's Evening News .. .
and later converted the farm
into a restaurant called Ben's
Bullpen, patronized by
localites of Orion Township.
Noah saw something others
didn't, though . . . and his far-
sightedness has paid off for he
and wife Pat as their Hay-
makers Restaurant on Joslyn
Road in Lake Orion became a
well-known, let-out secret .. .
Once the word got out, people
came and returned.
Nothing is made from a can
at Haymakers, which seats
160 . . . 110 upstairs and 50
downstairs . . . plus a loft for
musicians . . . It is as you
would expect from a Michigan
historical site . . . with simple
decor as farm and dairy tools
hang on the over 100-year-old
walls.
Haymakers Food and
Spirits opened in 1987 with
its down-to-earth cooking and
service that has been luring
people back for more from all
parts of north Oakland
County.
Noah and Pat have always
been prideful in their food
preparation and how it is
served . . . This pride has
done much to have customers
return and tell others.
What had at one time seem-
ed such a long ride is totally
almost a snap once folks find
Haymakers . . . They
ultimately return and have
very little trouble discovering
its location again.
This quaint restaurant with
colored water-filled wine bot-
tles on all the tables is
elegant in its simplicity as
evidenced by the menu,
which includes traditional
American dishes, both
gourmet and standard, and
lighter fare.
Very important too . . . Hay-
makers is smack dab within
short distances of three major
entertainment facilities .. .
Palace at Auburn Hills, seven
minutes . . . The New Pine
Knob, nine minutes . . .

Meadowbrook, 12 minutes.
And someone must have
given Noah and Pat a shove to
buy the place because of a
knowledge no earthling or
mere mortal could have
known about . . . The entire
area will soon become a huge
shopping development that
will surround their Hay-
makers Restaurant . . .
Indianwood Village will be an
English Tudor setup of shops
which Haymaker's decor will
blend in nicely with since its
outdoor look is also Tudor
with a blue and white
building that stands out amid
the enchanting country
setting.
Haymakers Restaurant has
grown with much popularity
. . . deservedly so.

CONGRATS to Irving and
Bebe Field . . . former
localites now living in San
Diego, Calif. . . . on their 50th
anniversary . . . Also to their
daughter Bonnie and son-in-
law Dr. Abe Romanowsky .. .
on their 24th anniversary .. .
and grandson Jonathan
Romanowsky, now in Jeru-
salem, Israel, as an exchange
student from University of
California-Berkley on his
20th birthday . . . Commerce
High grads Irving and Bebe's
50th celebration on the Car-
nival line's Jubilee to the
Mexican Riviera, was one big
happy family reunion, with
all going on the cruise with
them . . . plus son Dr. Phillip
Field and Carol Field, and
granddaughter Diana Field.

EVERY ANNIVERSARY

party seems to get bigger in
many ways . . . and always
with more new faces . . .
Number eight at Nicky's, Top
Of Troy Bldg., W. Big Beaver,
was another biggie event for
owners Nick Sorise and John
Reaser who many said
wouldn't celebrate a first an-
niversary at Nicky's because
of others there (Bonaventure,
Kogy's, Sydney's) who
couldn't make it . . . What
people didn't figure on was
something all the others lack-
ed . . . gracious personalities
to go along with wonderful
customer satisfaction.
Balloons galore amid color-
ful neons and grays in the
very festive atmosphere that
also showcased the good
entertainment at Nicky's .. .
This time it was the "220"
group doing a lot of rhythmiz-
ing for listening and dancing
. . . and a caricaturist for peo-
ple to say, "Is that me??" .. .
Enough food to feed two an-
niversary parties as Ex-

ecutive Chef Marty Elias and
his staff kept refilling the
pans for hungry second- and
third-timers to the buffet
tables . . . Marty was night
chef before taking over the
head post about eight months
ago.
Restaurateurs Pete Ginopo-
lis of Ginopolis' and Marty
Wilk of Excalibur, greeting
people who also come to their
establishments . . . Financial
planner Audrey Pearl giving
free advice on money-making
. . . A lot of laughter and fun
as Nicky's staffers went all
out again for folks to have a
good time . . . Tracy Stockard,
day manager, who served as
one of the hostesses; Steve
Blow, evening manager; Steve
Weinger, bar manager; and
general manager Carol
Bobier with the striking gold
dress.
Al and Adeline Stern say-
ing they'll go to the BBG,
BBYO, etc. reunion of all

Haymakers in Lake
Orion is drawing a
crowd.

years with grandchildren
Rebecca Stern, 19, attending
University of Michigan;
Karen Stern, 16, at Harrison
High; and Jonathon Stern .. .
Al was with Shaarey Zedek
Chapter of BBYO's AZA, and
Adeline (Teitel) was one of the
original members of the
Rebecca Gratz BBG (B'nai
B'rith Girls) that met
upstairs of a store on Taylor
and 12th . . . Rebecca and
Karen were with Shira BBG,
and Jonathon one of the
K'ishon AZA boys.
Nicky and John look at so
many of their friends either
folding or finding it rough to
continue in the restaurant
business and thank heaven
for ,a happy eighth . . . with
plans already being talked
about for anniversary
number nine . . . and innova-
tions for the big ten.
SHE WHISPERS, "I'm
bringing real mandelbread to
the afterglow following our
performance" but Shirley
Craft has roused the ire of
Yona Friedman who says,
"Are you saying my butter-
scotch mandelbread isn't
real?" . . . and Lucille Warren
retorts with "I've got the
original recipe."
It's rehearsal time for the
upcoming Yiddish flavor
musical by Fran Aaron and
Jackie Klein, "The Street
Singer," Oct. 10, 7 p.m. at Pep-
