Temple Beth El
Honors Dr. Hertz
The officers, board of
trustees and past presidents
of Temple Beth El will honor
Rabbi Hertz at a reception
and dinner 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at
the temple.
Rabbi Richard C. Hertz was
ordained at the Hebrew
Union College, Cincinnati, in
1942. He arrived in Detroit in
1953 to assume the post of
senior rabbi of Temple Beth
El, becoming Rabbi Emeritus
in 1982. Under his leadership,
the new temple was built and
the mortgage burned the
week he retired.
Dr. Hertz has served as a
member of the faculty of the
University of Detroit, is a
member of the board of
trustees of Marygrove College
and the Economic Club of
Detroit.
Dr. Hertz received an
honorary doctorate from
Hebrew Union College in
1967; he was chairman of its
board of overseers from
1968-1972.

Shir Shalom
Offers Classes
Temple Shir Shalom will of-
fer classes for adults 7:30-9:30
p.m. on Tuesday evenings
beginning Oct. 8.
Corrine Stavish, storyteller,
will offer two courses, "An In-
troduction to Judaism
Through Jewish Stories" and
"Tales of Chasidim."
A "How to Be Jewish"
workshop conducted by Rab-
bi Dannel Schwartz and Dena
Sanders will be offered, as
well as introductory and in-
termediate Hebrew classes,
introduction to Judaism
classes, and adult bar and bat
mitzvah classes.
