Highlights Chairs
The Challenge of the Chair,
the 15th exhibition in the
Michigan. Artists Program
series, will be on view in the
Michigan Artists Gallery at
the Detroit Institute of Arts
through Nov. 18. Featuring
the work of 17 Michigan ar-
tists, the exhibition explores
the form and function of an
everyday object, the chair, and
poses the question of whether
furniture is fine art,
decorative art or craft.
Among artists included in
the exhibition are Scott
Brazeau, West Bloomfield;
Raymond Katz, Pontiac;
Stephen Kosinski, Detroit;
Brian Kritzman, Detroit; and
Lois Ibicher, Dearborn.
Raymond Katz, professor,
Oakland Community College,
Auburn Hills, resides in Pon-
tiac. He explores the use of in-
dustrial materials in a fine
arts yet fully functional con-
text. He feels that the crea-
tion of furniture nurtures the
development of his sculpture,
and that his work as a
sculptor strengthens his fur-
niture forms. Tendril Lounge
Rocker, with armrests
evocative of plant forms, in-
corporates the perforations,
textured surfaces and gently
flowing lines that
characterize Mr. Katz's work.
This exhibition is free with
museum admission. The DIA
is open Wed.-Sat. 9:30
a.m.-5:30 p.m.
