diluted and converted to a
liquid or tablet and then
produced in several
strengths. A homeopathic
physician recommends a
remedy after considering the
individual's condition as a
whole, not based solely on
his ailment.
Mr. Sternberg said he first
became interested in
homeopathy while a student
at the Wayne State Univer-
sity pharmacy school. There,
he enrolled in a course
where he studied plant,
animal and vegetable pro-
ducts produced in the human
body.
After graduation he open-
ed his own pharmacy, selling
traditional medicines. But
seven years ago he stumbled
across an article that renew-
ed his interest in homeopathy.

The article was by a Penn-
sylvania pharmacist who
wrote of a customer suffer-
ing from severe migraine
headaches. The pharmacist
recommended arnica mon-
tana, a homeopathic remedy.
Fifteen minutes after taking
the pills, the man's
headache disappeared.
Curious, Mr. Sternberg or-
dered homeopathic medi-
cines to sell at his own
pharmacy. At first, he had
few customers. That didn't
last long. Soon, Mr. Stern-
berg found himself selling
remedies not only to
Detroiters, but to residents
of Grand Rapids, Toledo and
Windsor.

This convinced Mr. Stern-
berg to give the mail-order
homeopathic business a try.
So far, it has proved finan-
cially viable, he said, though
the still-young company
has yet to see massive
profits. Consequently, Barry
Sternberg has worked only
part-time at the business to
date.
"We're getting a nice
return on our investments,"
Robert Sternberg said. "But
we're reinvesting most of

that. I expect that in two
years we'll be earning
enough so we can both do
this full time."
Mr. Sternberg, who pur-
chases most of his
homeopathic remedies from
France, said he meets many
of his customers by giving
lectures to "study groups,"
where patrons learn the
basics of homeopathy. In
southwest Michigan such
groups can attract literally
hundreds, he said.
Mr. Sternberg estimates
he acquires between 150 and
300 new customers every
month.
Mr. Sternberg stressed
that homeopathic medicines
are not the only answer to

physical ailments. "These
are not drugs; they're
remedies," he said. "And
homeopathy is not the final
answer in medicine, it never
has been."
But homeopathic medi-
cines are cheaper than tradi-
tional medicines (a bottle of
Motrin costs about $7.70,
while a similar homeopathic
remedy, arnica, is $3.95 for
100 tablets). They have vir-
tually no adverse reactions,
and are safe for children and
pregnant women when ap-
proved by a physician. And
in many cases, homeopathic
remedies have proven to be
remarkable cures, he said.
"I have a bad back, which I
threw out six months ago,"
Mr. Sternberg said. "So I
took two remedies, and by
the end of the day I was up
and about with no prob-
lems."
