Owens May Run
For Senate Seat
Utah may be the scene of a
Senate battle next year with
major implications for the
pro-Israel community.
Rep. Wayne Owens, D-
Utah, a middle-of-the-road
pro-Israel politician who
favors communicating with
all parties to the Middle
East dispute, is seriously
considering a run for the
seat being vacated by Sen.
Jake Garn, a Republican.
Recently, Mr. Owens sent
out a fund-raising letter hin-
ting broadly that he was get-
ting set for a Senate run.
The mailing also included
results of a poll suggesting
that Mr. Owens, who is the
state's only Democratic
representative, has a good
shot at replacing Mr. Garn.
In the past few years, Mr.
Owens has become a major
congressional player on the
Middle East scene. He has
taken his role as member of
the Foreign Affairs sub-
committee on Europe and
the Middle East seriously,
visiting the Middle East 15
times in three years.
Several years ago, he met
with PLO chairman Yassir
Arafat — part of his ongoing
effort to meet all the major
players in the Middle East
drama. This year, he has had
two long meetings with
Syria's president Assad.
In recent weeks, Mr.
Owens played an active role
in the drive for $10 billion in
loan guarantees for Israel.
But he has also spoken out
forcefully against Israel's
settlements policies.
When asked about his
Senate aspirations, Mr.
Owens did not resort to the
contrived coyness of many
politicians.
"I'm thinking about it," he
said. "I may yet do it."
