Israel Bonds Leaders Meet In Israel Israel's Prime Minister Yit- zhak Shamir told a delega- tion of more than 200 Israel Bonds leaders that invest- ment in Israel is necessary for the continued resettlement of the new immigrants. "Bonds have a very significant role to play in the historic process of strengthening our poeple and developing our land," he said. Jonathan Brateman of Detroit, a member of the North American New Leader- ship Cabinet of State of Israel Bonds, was among the Israel Bond New Leadership dele- gates who toured Israel to ex- perience the absorption pro- cess at first hand. Many members of the delegation ar- rived directly from the Soviet Union where they took part in a five-day fact-finding mis- sion into the situation of Soviet Jews. The Bond delegates were received by Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, Finance Minister Yitzhak Moda'i, Housing and Construction Minister Ariel Sharon, and Police Minister Roni Milo. Israel's top leaders emphasiz- ed the-role of Israel Bonds in the country's economic devel- opment. At a housing site in the development town of Kiryat Gat, Minister Sharon noted an increase of almost 10 per- cent in Israel's population as a result of recent im- migration. The delegation purchased a record $1 million in Israel Bonds. A visit to Beersheba gave delegates another on-the-spot view of the absorption proces. Beersheba Mayor Yitzhak Rager told the Bond leaders the influx of immigrants represented a "golden oppor- tunity?' He said Israel Bonds was "a loan in the family" to absorb these immigrants. Mr. Khaled, arrested in Greece in March on unrelated charges, was to go on trial here this week for drug and arms smuggling. An appeals court had or- dered his extradition to Ita- ly, where he was convicted in absentia in the Achille Lauro case. But the Greek Supreme Court has now twice delayed hearing his appeal. Mr. Khaled, 56, is de- scribed as the right-hand man of Palestinian terrorist Mohammed (Abul) Abbas, said to have actually masterminded the hijacking, which occurred in Egyptian waters. Mr. Khaled, who was aboard the Achille Lauro, disembarked at Alexandria before gunmen seized the vessel, which was on a Mediterranean cruise from Genoa with a large number of American tourists aboard. The passengers and crew were held hostage until Oct. 10. In that period, Leon Kl- inghoffer, an American Jew confined to a wheelchair by a stroke, was shot to death by one of the hijackers and thrown overboard. Mr. Khaled's defense against extradition is mistaken identity.
