Nathan Balaban of Bloom-
field Hills died Sept. 30. He
was 85.
Mr. Balaban was a former
co-owner and co-founder of
Service Office Supply. He was
a member of Temple Beth El,
the Probus Club of Detroit, a
former member of the Tam
O'Shanter Country Club and
the Moslem Shrine Club.
He leaves his wife, Bernice;
daughter and son-in-law,
Carol and Dale Davis of
Miami, Fla.; brother and
sister-in-law, Sol and Pearl of
Bloomington, Ind.; four
grandchildren; one great-
grandson.

SYLVIA G. TANNEN-
BAUM, 85, of Detroit, died
Sept. 26. She leaves her
brother Morris Gold; nieces
and nephews, Marilynn
Jacobs of Detroit, Harold
Jacobs of Mt. Clemens, Joyce
Gold, Paul Fink and Sanford
Gold.

LUCYLLE S. WONBOY, 68,
of Bloomfield Hills, died Oct.
1. She leaves her husband,
Louis; sons and daughter-in-
law, Ronald and Nancy, and
Richard; daughter, Kathy;
brother, Louis Golden; sisters
and brothers-in-law, Vera and
Isadore Weinberg, Doris and
Maurice Chandler; five
grandchildren.

Herbert Freedland,
Howell CEO

Herbert H. Freedland of
Bloomfield Hills died Sept.
29. He was 54.
Mr. Freedland was for 32
years with Howell Industries,
Inc., which was founded by his
father. He was chairman of
the board and chief executive
officer for the company, an
automotive parts supplier. He
was a lifelong member of
Adat Shalom Synagogue.
Mr. Freedland graduated
from the University of
Michigan in 1958 and was a
member of the Presidents
Club and Alumni Associa-
tion. He was a supporter of
the Allied Jewish Campaign,
was active with the Michigan
Cancer Foundation, Juvenile
Diabetes, JARC, Zionist
Organization of America,
Jewish Community Center,
Renaissance Club, Craftsman
Lodge F & AM, Louis Mar-
shall Lodge B'nai B'rith,
Men's ORT and Founders
Society of the DIA.
Mr. Freedland leaves his
wife, Rona; daughters and

Harry Ernstein,
Businessman

Harry Ernstein of South-
field died Sept. 25. He was 90.
Mr. Ernstein was co-founder
and co-owner of Northway
Tobacco and Candy Co. and
the Great Lakes Vending
Company in the late 1920s
and was in business more
than 40 years. He also owned
several bowling alleys and
was a member of the Keidan
Lodge B'nai B'rith and the
Birmingham Temple.
He leaves his wife, Bertha;
son, Earl of Southfield;
daughter and son-in-law,
Myra and Mel Jacobs of
West Bloomfield; two grand-
children.

Fela Perelman,
Belgian Baroness
Brussels (JTA) — Baroness
Fela Perelman, a lifelong
supporter of Jewish causes
and Israel, died late last
month after a brief illness.
Mrs. Perelman was buried
at the Jewish Cemetery near
Brussels, beside her hus-
band, Chaim Perelman, a
Belgian philosopher made a
baron by King Baudouin.
Born in Lodz, Poland, to a
family of rabbis, Fela
Perelman came to Belgium
before World War II. She
was educated at Brussels
Free University.
Before the war, she was
secretary-general of the
Council of Jewish Associa-
tions, and during the war
she chaired a relief organ-
ization. Later, she headed a
Jewish children's home and
aided the underground.
