free-standing store in
Tel-12 Mall, Tele-
graph and 12 Mile, is
not only the answer to
"Where can people get a good
cup of coffee?" . . . but also a
semblance of proof that
there's more to America's
number one drink than meets
the palate.
There is coffee and there is
coffee, regular or decaf, could
very well be a saying at the
Coffee Beanery next to
lel-12's water fountain on the
far side of the Restaurants on
Main Street food court . . . 55
imported and one United
States (Kona from Hawaii) .. .
All but about a dozen are
flavored .. . and the decaf is
made with a Swiss water pro-
cess in which no chemicals
whatsoever are used.
The Coffee Beanery was
originally the site of a florist
. . . and became the local fran-
chise in a 47-store chain
about three years ago . . .
taken over by Ron Hoffman
on Jan. 18 of this year.
It is the only company in
Michigan, we are told, that
buys whole beans and roasts
them . . . This process is done
daily by Ron's staff . . . The
full beans are bought in
various countries and put in
air-tight bags, as fresh as can
be gotten, and then roasted
by the local Coffee Beanery
itself.
General Manager Jennifer
Evans is only 19 years old,
but already an expert on cof-
fees and teas . . . as is Rita
Scheer, sales gal and
specialist . . . Both are train-
ed in customer-pleasing and
ultimate satisfaction that
brings people back.
The Coffee Beanery pro-
bably serves one of the
freshest cups of coffee around
. . . After being freshly-
roasted, the coffee made for
serving to peole is thrown out
every 20 minutes if not sold
. . . and a fresh pot brewed to
take its place.
Specialty drinks, too, are
big at the Coffee Beanery .. .
like hot-spiced Viennese (pure
chocolate syrup, Beanery-
blend coffee and a cinnamon-
spiced mixture) and Cafe
Caramel (pure caramel,
heavy cream, Beanery-blend
coffee, fresh whipped cream
and fresh ground chocolate
shavings) . . . Also chocolate
cappuccino (pure chocolate
topped with nutmeg and cin-

namon and cocoa powder)
among others.
And where else can you find
a place with coffee like this
that also serves fresh bagels
and cream cheese, fresh-
baked muffins and short-
bread cookies? . . . An open
window is not seen from the
Restaurants on Main Street
area because it faces into
another side of the mall .. .
But here is where people get
a lot of freshness, sit by the
water fountain, on benches,
or at a table of the food court.
Coffee is the big thing at
the Coffee Beanery, but tea
isn't ignored . . . There are 22
different teas . . . And the lit-
tle store is big on accessories,
too, like coffee mugs, cof-
feemakers (electric and non-
electric), cappuccino and
espresso makers, teapots, ser-
ving carafes, filters,
demitasse cups, etc.
Coffee savoring is much like
wine tasting . . . Con-
noisseurs can tell the dif-
ference . . . That's why a place
like the Coffee Beanery is im-
portant . . . A lot more people,
many more, drink coffee than
they do wine, but you never
hear about a coffee tasting.
Don't try to fool the coffee
drinkers . . . They are in a
class by themselves . . . Give
them a good cup of coffee for
much happiness . . . The Cof-
fee Beanery at Tel-12 is a
welcomed revelation for
them.
CONGRATS . . . to travel
gal Gail Shapiro . . . on her
birthday . . . "Number 32 for
the 18th time" as she puts it.

JEWISH MERCHANDI-
SING Committee at Kroger
will be one-year-old in Oc-
tober . . . Purpose has been to
set ways of catering more to
Jewish consumers, look to the
needs of the Jewish communi-
ty and facilitate better under-
standing of Jewish holidays
and respective food items .. .
The committee, which meets
monthly, is made up of
Kroger deli, grocery and meat
department heads, along with
store and zone managers.
Kroger stores in the greater
Detroit community look on
the Jewish Merchandising
Committee as an important
cog . . . It often meets with in-
formed individuals and
organizations to make certain
Kroger is carrying full selec-
tions of products the Jewish
community wants, plus being
responsible for maintaining a
high quality standard at com-
petitive prices.
In addition to the selection

H

of kosher Kroger-brand items,
the Jewish Merchandising
Committee has added
numerous other kosher pro-
ducts to Kroger supermarkets
in communities serving
Jewish families . . . Recently
the committee conducted a
study on dairy and deli trays
with enthusiastic results on
the trays now being offered by
Kroger.
WORKING IN a medical
laboratory in Farmington
Hills, Diane Charette tells of
Louis Shaya, a technologist
there who came to the United
States from the Middle East
18 years ago . . . He overheard
someone telling of 5752 being
the Jewish New Year . . . Fri-
day before Rosh Hashanah,
Louis played 5752 on the four-
digit Michigan Lotto game,
winning over $2,000 . . . "On-
ly in America can an Arabic

A new pot is
brewed fresh every
20 minutes.

man win a lot of money play-
ing the number for the
Jewish New Year" was gleeful
excitement remark overheard
at the lab, says Charette.
WHY NOT a hole-in-one
for his birthday present? .. .
Doesn't every golfer get an
ace to commemorate the occa-
sion? . . . Celebration for
Larry Yanitz's 68th was while
playing the Wabeek Country
Club links with daughter
Sandy Stark . . . using a
number seven iron on the
165-yard hole . . . People like
Phyllis Tyner are still looking
for their first and Larry has
two now . . . His initial
whoopie drive was a few years
back at Bay Pointe Golf Club.
BLOOMFIELD CHAR-
LEY's and Northville
Charley's will become
takeoffs on a Chuck Muer
Florida restaurant concept
. . . Both are presently being
remodeled . . . Bloomfield
Charley's reopens this year as
W.B. Pal's, and Northville
Charley's opens early next
year as N.V. Pal's.
All the restaurants Chuck
Muer bought back from the
Charley's Restaurant Group
were closed Sept. 10 . . . and
he has already sold three of
them again . . . Southfield
Charley's becomes another
Mr. B's and Paragon
Steakhouse Restaurants,
parent company of Mountain
Jack's, is purchasing Eastside
Charley's in Harper Woods
and Livonia Charley's.
