Call The Jewish News 354-5959 Museum/Gallery Abstract Exhibition The Janice Charach Eps- tein Museum/Gallery will open its 1991-92 exhibition season with an abstract pain- ting, drawing and print ex- hibition entitled "Portraits" Sept. 26-Oct. 24. The exhibition will feature new works by Lynn Avadenka, Nancy Mitchnick, Marilyn Schechter and Dale Sparage. An opening recep- tion for the artists will be held 4:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 26. The artists explore the idea of portraiture expressed non- objectively. The basically abstract paintings, drawings and prints have been created within the past year, and depict each artist's search for self in today's confusing environment. Lynne Avadenka displays boxes and monoprints which raise biblical women's con- cerns and questions relevant today. Nancy Mitchnick's series of paintings gesturally depict the artist in a variety of emo- tional states through the metaphor of a red table in a defined space. Marilyn Schechter presents feminist investigations with new paintings on wood and charcoal drawings, expressing a subconscious search for the artist's past. Dale Sparage exhibits large-scale paintings and drawings which expres- sionistically depict the ques- tion of a woman's role in to- day's society. Accompanying the exhibi- tion will be an educational brochure providing the viewer with biographical informa- tion of the artists and an essay by curator Sharon Zim- merman. Nancy Mitchnick will provide a lecture on the reality/unreality of por- traiture painting and photography 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8. There is a charge.
