How can Israel believe the
administration is acting
fairly when it compares its
"reward" for restraint dur-
ing the Persian Gulf War
with King Hussein's
"punishment" for suppor-
ting Saddam Hussein?
Israel's request for the $10
billion loan guarantee for
Soviet Jewish resettlement
has been held hostage and
the Jerusalem government
has been portrayed in Wash-
ington as a stumbling block
to Mideast peace.
Here's what Secretary of
State Baker had to say last
week about King Hussein,
while visiting Jordan:
"Your Majesty, in my view
no one has been more seri-
ous, more substantive, more
constructive in their efforts,
and no one has exhibited
greater leadership and
courage, sir, then have you.
in your efforts . . . to address
this very, very difficult prob-
lem."
Give me a break, Mr. Sec-
retary.
The administration has
given the Arab states letters
of assurances that support
Syria's demand for the
return of the Golan Heights,
as part of the return of
Israeli-held land "on all
fronts." It is difficult for
Israel to conclude other than
that the peace talks are an
elaborate attempt to set up a
Palestinian homeland in the
occupied territories — espe-
cially when Jerusalem's be
best
friend, Washington, won't
assuage its fears.
Israel's leaders may be
stubborn, foolhardy at times
and lacking in diplomacy.
But, thankfully, they aren't
ready to commit national
suicide. 0

Americans Say
Replace PLO

New York (JTA) — Two-
thirds of Americans
surveyed believe the Pales-
tinians should choose a
moderate group of leaders to
replace the Palestine Lib-
eration Organization as
their representative, the An-
ti-Defamation League re-
ported.
A poll showed that 55
percent of the respondents
also questioned "the wisdom
of the Bush administration's
efforts to bring Syria to the
peace conference," said Ab-
raham Foxman of ADL.
Americans are "skeptical
of any change in Arab at-
titudes toward Israel,"
despite the readiness of some
Arab countries to' come to
the peace table, he said.
