thright comments were
nice," said one Washington-
based official with a pro-
Israel group. "It's a positive
sign that he is making some
gestures of reconciliation.
But this does not alter the
underlying situation — that
Mr. Bush is willing to risk
the peace process and risk
the futures of hundreds of
thousands of Soviet refugees
because of his anger about
settlements."

Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, added that
repeal of the resolution "will
help advance the cause of
peace in the Middle East. It
will break the terrible sense
of isolation that Israel has
lived with at the United
Nations for more than 15
years, and it will help
