Deny Charges
Bonn (JTA) — German in-
dustrialists are taking the
offensive against media
reports accusing some of the
best-known firms of aiding
Iraq's quest for nuclear
weapons.
The latest charges, in the
Hamburg-based weekly Der
Spiegel,named Interatom, a
subsidiary of the high-tech
electronics giant Siemens, as
a supplier of facilities and
equipment designed to im-
prove Iraq's nuclear
capabilities.
A Siemens spokesman
countered swiftly, saying the
report was a lie and that
Interatom supplied Iraq only
with pipes and containers.
A spokesman for the
Association of German In-
dustrialists denounced the
report as yet another at-
tempt to spread rumors and
half truths before an in-
dependent investigation is
launched.
He stressed that none of
the dozens of German com-
panies accused of illegal ex-
ports to Iraq has been found
guilty in court.
Observers concede that but
say part of the reason is that
the German authorities
have been extremely slow to
prosecute the accused com-
panies, allowing time to
shred documents and
destroy other evidence.
Moreover, many in-
dustrialists are sure the
government lacks the polit-
ical will to press the cases
vigorously, the observers
said.
Der Spiegel, quoting U.N.
sources, said Interatom
shipped equipment for a
facility south of Baghdad
that is a center for the devel-
opment of nuclear
technology.
In addition, that firm,
among others, made
available to Iraq centrifuges
designed to produce enriched
uranium, which is needed
For atomic bombs, the maga-
zine said.
The loss of Kfar Etzion,
south of Jerusalem, was one
of the great tragedies of the
battle for independence in
1948. In April repeated Arab
attacks on the settlement
were repelled, but on May 12
several hundred Arabs
renewed the attack, killing
100 Jews. Only four surviv-
ed. Fifteen members of Kfar
Etzion were machine- gunn-
ed to death after they had
surrendered and were being
photographed by their cap-
tors.
