biologist, in the late 1960s
Dr. Hacker's students began
questioning her after class
about the moral and per-
sonal issues regarding

then that she gained insight
as to how people and their
values were changing. Dr.
Hacker wanted to be a part
of that movement. She
returned to school to get her
doctorate in population
planning.
Part of her degree con-
sisted of survey and inter-
view work with teens to
discover why they were not
using contraception as un-
wanted pregnancy rates
were rising. Her conclusion
was they did not accept
themselves as sexual beings
Most have been
supportive. But
she has been
called "evil" by
those who oppose
her openness.

aims and methods. However,
she has been called "evil" by
those who oppose her
openness. And there are some
who neither detest nor sup-
port Dr. Hacker, but instead
proposition her.
"Well, once I was asked to
have an affair by a younger
man who figured if I talked
about sex I must be good at
it. I told him I'd only be in-
volved if it was catered," Dr.
Hacker said.
That quick wit and humor
permeates her lectures and
helps put students at ease
about a personal subject. Dr.
Hacker shows erotic films in
class for the same reason.
"At first these movies
rattle the students. But I
show them how this is not
pornography, but erotica,
because it is consentual.
Pornography is not consen-
tual," Dr. Hacker said. "A
lot of people think they know
what pornography is but
they don't. Two people mak-
ing love is not pornography,
violence is.
"When we learn to tell the
difference, when we learn to
celebrate our sexuality, then
everyone can have great
orgasms," she said. ❑
