Federation Apartments
Will Construct 97 New Units

the architects. Luckenbach,
Ziegelman and Partners, Inc.
are consulting architects.
Total development costs will
be approximately $6 million.

Three Young Leaders
Are Given Federation Awards

In recognition of communi-
ty involvement and outstan-
ding promise, three young
leaders have been selected to
receive the Jewish Federa-
tion's annual Young Leader-
ship Awards.
Douglas Etkin will receive
the Frank A. Wetsman
Award, Susan Alterman the
Sylvia Simon Greenberg
Award and Brian Kepes the
William H. Boesky Memorial
Award.
The Wetsman and Green-
berg awards provide for the
honorees' attendance at the
General Assembly of the
Council of Jewish Federa-
tions. The Boesky Award,
presented annually to a
Young Adult Division (YAD)
member, provides for his or
her attendance at the United
Jewish Appeal Young Leader-
ship Conference.
Co-chairman of the United
Charities (UJC) Real Estate
and Property Management
Committee, Mr. Etkin sits on
the UJC board and Federa-
tion's Capital Needs Division.
Mr. Etkin has been involv-
ed as an Allied Jewish Cam-
paign volunteer for several
years. He participated on the
Hadracha leadership develop-
ment program, and served on
the UJA Young Leadership
Cabinet.
Ms. Alterman, past YAD
Campaign chairman, will co-
chair the Business and Pro-
fessional Women's Division
$500 section. She also serves
on Federation's Strategic
Planning and Leadership
Development committees and

Division.
Nationally, she is the
Region 2 recruitment chair-
man of the United Jewish Ap-
peal Women's Young Leader-
ship Cabinet and is its
Detroit chairman and na-

Jewish Federation Apart-
ments and B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization.

Mr. Kepes, chairman of the
1991 YAD Executive Commit-
tee, is the division's im-
mediate past president. He
has been involved in all levels
of the YAD Campaign. He is
a member of Federation's
Leadership Development
Committee. He was YAD's
liaison to Federation's Board
of Governors and the boards
of Sinai Hospital, Fresh Air
Society and Jewish Family
Service.

Are Invited On Tour

Gallery at the Maple/Drake
Jewish Community Center as
guests of Shalom Detroit, the
Jewish Federation Women's
Division welcoming commit-
tee. The tour will be held 9:30
a.m. Oct. 4.

Detroit-area residents will
meet each other and the

while learning about the

The gathering includes
snacks and activities for
children. It is being organiz-

Mandell L. Berman and Madeleine H. Berman present the annual
Berman Award for Outstanding Professional Service to Joyce Keller,
executive director of JARC. The award recognizes the contributions

Alyn Hospital Group
Honors Two Founders

Ann and Leonard Baruch
will be honored as founding
members of the Detroit
Friends of Alyn Hospital of
Jerusalem 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24
at the home of Dr. Bill and
Florine Mark-Ross.
Alyn is Israel's only long-
term orthopedic hospital and
rehabilitation center for
physically handicapped
children.
Mr. Baruch, a native
Detroiter and graduate of
Wayne State University, is
the executive director of Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek. He
is a past president of the
Men's Club. He is past presi-
dent of the Southfield Library
Board and the Oakland Coun-
ty Library Board. He is a
member of the Zionist
Organization of Detroit board
of directors and has served as
Chairman of the Junior Divi-
sion of the Allied Jewish
Campaign and on the Jewish
Community Council.
Mrs. Baruch retired last

government subsidies offered
in the four other JFA
buildings.
The building will be con-
nected to the present
Hechtman Federation Apart-
ments in West Bloomfield and
is being named Lillian and
Samuel Hechtman Federa-
tion Apartments II, based
upon a gift from the
Hechtmans in 1982. It is ex-
pected to be finished in 12-14
months.

School Collecting
Watches For Emigres

The Community Jewish
High School will sponsor
"Watch IJS," a tzedakah pro-
ject for the Jewish communi-
ty. The purpose of "Watch
Us" is to collect digital
wristwatches for the Ethio-
pian Jews who arrived in
Israel in June 1991. Watches
will be collected from
September through
November 1991.
In December the watches
will be brought to Israel by a

representative of the Detroit
Jewish Community. Bring
new or slightly used wrist-
watches with new batteries to
the United Hebrew Schools
Building, 21550 W. 12 Mile
Road, Southfield.
