At Kidd Gallery

An exhibition of new pain-
tings by Ronnie Landfield
will open at Robert Kidd
Gallery continuing through
Oct. 12.
Ronnie Landfield, a New
York artist, paints abstracted
landscapes. Using an acrylic
stain technique, he layers
washes of color to invent a
sense of deep space. A fram-
ing device of bands of intense,
opaque color, containing lat-
ticelike designs on the bottom
and sides of the paintings
suggests an architectural set-
ting in the mode of a Matis-
sean window.
Mr. Landfield, now 44,
began his successful painting
career early. By the time he
was 16, in 1963, he had left
his native New York to study
at the Kansas City Art In-
stitute and had met painters
such as Milton Avery and
Hans Hoffman. By the time
he was 20, Philip Johnson
and Robert Scull had each
purchased a painting from
him; he was living in a studio
in the Bowery and was
devoting himself full-time to
making art.
Mr. Landfield's first solo ex-
hibition in New York sold out,
with four of the works going
to museums: the Museum of
Modern Art, the Whitney
Museum, the Bavarian State
Museum and the Hirshhorn
Museum.
A prominent feature of Mr.
Landfield's recent paintings
is the drawing overlaying the
color field which is suggestive
of trees and other vegetation,
through which one looks into
a peaceful, timeless mys-
teriousness. These works
radiate a gentle elegance,
and, in the Oriental tradition,
they capture an endless mo-
ment in time. Mr. Landfield
has been selected three times
for the "Whitney Biennial of
American Art." He is
represented in numerous
museum collections in-
cluding: Aldrich Museum of
Contemporary Art; Art In-
stitute of Chicago; Lannan
Foundation, Los Angeles;
Norton Simon Museum of
Art, Pasadena and Walker
Art Center, Minneapolis.
The Robert Kidd Gallery is
at 107 Townsend St., Birm-
ingham. Gallery hours are
Tues.-Sat. 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
