Morocco Expels
Jewish Marxist

Paris (JTA) - A 65-year-old
Moroccan Jew, said to be one
of the world's longest-held
political prisoners, was ex-
pelled from Morocco after 17
years in prison there and ar-
rived here last week.
Abraham Serfaty was de-
scribed as a Marxist-
Leninist militant opposed to
the rule of King Hassan. He
was arrested in 1974 for
"plotting against the
regime" and in 1977 was
sentenced to life imprison-
ment.
He could not explain his
release but told the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency he
thought "the Moroccan au-
thorities are trying to isolate
me as a Jew."
He cited the fact that they
sent the leader of the Jewish
community, Serge Berdugo,
to accompany him on the
flight from Casablanca to
Paris.
"It's old tactics," Mr. Ser-
faty said. "I have always
fought as a Moroccan mili-
tant. I never denied having
been a Jew, and as a
Moroccan Jew I fought
against Zionism.
"I am convinced this
struggle is important for the
future of Moroccan Jewry
within the framework of the
Moroccan people," he said.
He added that he was
fighting the expulsion order
and hoped to return to
Morocco.

Everyone has a home security system—leaving the
lights on and locking the deadbolt. Yet one in four
American homes is victimized by crime, and Justice
Dept. statistics reveal that most break-ins occur during
daylight hours. Yesterday's security measures just aren't
enough. Deadbolts and lightbulbs can't call the police
in case of a break-in.

Syrian Rally
Staged In Rome

Rome (JTA) — About two
dozen people carried banners
urging "Freedom for Syrian
Jews" and "Let My People
Go" in a peaceful demon-
stration outside the Syrian
Embassy here last week.
They prepared a letter for
the Syrian ambassador to
"transmit to the official
organs" in Damascus.
It contained a statement
explaining the purpose of
their demonstration and ex-
tended "to the Syrian Jew-
ish community our most
sincere and heartfelt wishes
for a `Shanah Tovah' for the
Jewish New Year 5752."
The statement said: "As
democrats concerned with
the defense of human rights
and as Europeans truly in-
terested in contributing to
peace in the Middle East, we
firmly commit ourselves to
solidarity with all Jewish
minorities in the Arab
states, whose human rights
are violated and who are not
permitted to emigrate."
