The head should be raised at all times while the neck and shoulders re- main relaxed. But before undertaking any activity, the budding speedwalker should consult a physician. "Essentially, anyone can do it at their own pace," said Dr. A. David Goldberg, car- diologist at Henry Ford Hospital. "Most people I see are not used to exercise. But I don't think age is some- thing to take into considera- tion, only medical condi- tion." While Dr. Goldberg says there may not be any direct link between walking and the minimizing of coronary heart disease, he believes walking can prevent the fac- tors that cause heart prob- lems. "People have to change their lifestyles," he said. "They should build up grad- ually, starting with 30 minutes a day. But if there's any problems like chest pains, shortness of breath or dizziness, they should con- sult a physician immedi- ately. "Be sensible — stop when you feel tired." Dr. Goldberg also feels a major problem with the sport is walking when it's too cold or when it's too hot. He recommends the shopping malls during summer and winter for a temperature- controlled environment. ❑ B'nai B'rith Women's Bowling High Scores Bobbie Blaize Eliane Goldstein Shirley Robbins Lorraine Friedman 201 200 220 212 Indoor/Ourdoor Pools & Tracks NEWS I Tennis", Racquetball & Squash Basketball & Walley ball Steam, Sauna & Whirlpools 11'1 Transmigrants Are The Birds n StairMasters, lifecycles, Versaclimber Nautilus, Treadmills, Rowing Machines & more Weight Rooms & Aerobic Classes for all levels Interest charge, initiation fee or hidden expenses Savings from $150•275 yes no ".•• ■■■■• *MIMI/ "additional cost for tennis court fees • $275 savings for 1825 year olds only • Good September 1991 only • must not have been a Health Club member in past year • some restrictions may apply 54 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1991 IIE For further information, please contact the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit MEMBERSHIP DEPARTMENT at 661.1000, ext. 265, 266. Tel Aviv (JTA) — Tens of thousands of visitors from the Soviet Union flew over Israel last week, but they were not new olim and they caused no problems with housing or employment. The visitors were a flock of some 50,000 storks, winging their way in mass formation in their annual migration from their summer dachas in Russia and Eastern Europe to their winter habitat in Africa. Officials of the Bird Watch section of the Society for the Preservation of Nature in Israel said it was the largest flock of storks since the start of the migration season two weeks ago, and the largest of a single species of birds ever seen in Israel since the an- nual bird watch began. The flock stretched some 60 to 70 miles. Radar operators at Ben- Gurion Airport, who keep a special watch for the birds, said the flock had by midday formed a long black band across their screens. The birds were well on their way out of Israeli air space in the Negev by eve- ning. The birds fly over the Israeli land bridge between Europe and Africa on the same dates each year and use identical routes. They are believed to navigate by following the Earth's gravitational and elec- tromagnetic lines of force.
