Who would have believed that within such a short time the mighty Soviet Empire would crumble. The atheistic armies which waged relent- less war against God and Torah seem to have met an untimely demise. Who brought this power to its knees? I'm going to change the subject slightly and hold this question in suspense. Mark Twain, in a small pamphlet entitled Concerning the Jews, wrote, "If the statistics are right, the Jews constitute but one percent of the human race . . . He has made a marvelous fight in this world; in all ages; and has done it all with his hands tied behind him . : . All things are mortal but the Jew; all other forces pass, but he remains. What is the secret of his immortali- ty?" What is our secret? We sur- vive without knowing how! This week's parsha discloses the secret. We are not like any other nation in history. Nations need a land, a language and a common culture. We Jews, as our history has proven, are in- dependent of these factors. We Jews only need our God for existence and identity. We are God's people. Mr. Twain no- ticed these obvious dif- ferences between the Jewish and non-Jewish nationhood, he just didn't understand what they indicated. Jews, no matter where we lived, what language and cultures we shared, have always been Jews. No matter what we did to blend and melt into our host environment, we always sought out the identifiable. Our parsha tells us that when the nation developed and the bounds of their power and dominion were set, they would never permanently in- clude the Jews. And again, our history has shown this to be correct. The parsha continues to emphasize that we are led by the Almighty. He gave us a task and in performance of this task He protects us. As long as Jews know that God is our portion we flourished and reflected His light into world civilization. Rabbi Tolwin is education director for Aleynu. 50 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1991 When we veered off course and viewed ourselves as just another nation, God's response was, as written in the parsha, to grant the glory and power due us to other nations. "They exchanged Me for a non-God . . . I'll exchange them for a non-nation . . ." Communism was a non- God. When it first raised its ugly head with promises of heaven on Earth, it attracted many from the Jewish people. Imbued for centuries with a Shabbat Haazinu: Deuteronorny 32:1-52; II Samuel 22:1-51. universal messianic concept, we were seduced by the pro- mises of the new order and the collective. Families were torn apart as communist Jews engaged Torah Jews in a fight to the death. Communism grew and expanded and threatened to engulf the entire world, and with it, extinguish the light of Torah. But the Jewish spirit, year- ning for God, will not be repressed. Jews rebelled, challenged in a most Jewish manner — underground Torah study, Zionist gather- ings, groups which publicly declared, for all to hear, the hoax of the Soviet utopia. Nudel, Sharansky, Esses, Mendelovitz — these and countless others defied the non-God and refused to bow. As they fought, the empire cracked. Hasn't this been a repeating theme in our history? Doesn't the parsha prophesize this also? This pattern was, is and will be. We are God's nation. He wants us and will enable us to continue, down to the end of time, to lead humani- ty to freedom. Mark Twain saw it. We've seen it. We Jews are eternal. Our eternity belongs to God. Let us, for this New Year realize this and live as our God wants us to live. ❑ Rabbi Wine Will Speak Rabbi Sherwin Wine will describe the philosophy and the programs of the Birm- ingham Temple and of Humanistic Judaism 8:30 p.m. Oct. 2 in the temple library.
