Kach Tactics
Benefit Israel

Jerusalem (JTA) — A
Kach activist charged with
assaulting Palestinian
leader Faisal Husseini
resorted to delaying tactics
at his trial's opening and in-
advertently drew from the
Palestinian nationalist a
clear statement recognizing
Israel's legitimacy.
Noam Federman, who
belongs to the anti-Arab
Kach movement, is conduc-
ting his own defense. Accus-
ed of attacking and spitting
on Husseini outside the
same courthouse six months
ago, he demanded a
dismissal on grounds that
the complainant did not rec-
ognize the court's jurisdic-
tion.
Mr. Husseini replied that
he does indeed recognize the
legitimacy of Israel's courts
because they were estab-
lished as a consequence of
the U.N. resolution of Nov.
29, 1947, calling for the
creation of a Jewish state
and an Arab state in
Palestine.
The hearing was cut short,
however, after Mr. Feder-
man raised the issue of Mr.
Husseini's training in Syria
in the mid-1960s.
Judge Hadassah Tsur rul-
ed it irrelevant, whereupon
Mr. Federman demanded
that the judge disqualify
herself. When she refused,
he insisted on the right to
appeal her refusal. That was
granted and court was ad-
journed.

Beersheba
Bomb Explosion

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A bomb
blast in Beersheba's crowded
open-air market injured two
people last week.
One of them, a 68-year-old
recent immigrant from the
Soviet Union, was
hospitalized for what were
described as moderate leg in-
juries and sounds. A woman,
treated on the spot for cuts on
her arm, was sent home.
The market and surroun-
ding area were sealed off as
police searched for the
perpetrators. About 30
Arabs were detained for
questioning. Most are ex-
pected to be released shortly.
The market was jammed
with last-minute shoppers
preparing for the Yom
Kippur holiday.
Police said the explosive
device was contained in a
plastic bag hidden under
apples next to a fruit and
vegetable stall.
