The Jewish National Fund
Presents
Artzenu Yisrael

Sephardi Group
Convention

Los Angeles — On Oct.
12-13, the American Sephar-
di Federation will invite the
public to get acquainted with
Sephardic traditions — from
Turkey, Rhodes, Iraq, Syria,
Greece, Egypt, India, Moroc-
co, Iran, Yemen, Tunisia,
Libya, and others. The Los
Angeles Sephardic communi-
ty has rallied its resources —
including over 150 volunteers
— to create the fair, special
seminars for Jewish
educators, and the ASF Na-
tional Convention, to be held
on Oct. 11-16.
The cultural fair, themed
"The Many Faces of Sephar-
dic Jews" will open at conven-
tion headquarters, the
Sheraton Universal Hotel in
Universal City, Calif. Stroll-
ing musicians and minstrels
will create a "street festival"
atmosphere for the 6,000
visitors.
"The Work of Our Hands"
exhibit will contain treasured
family heirlooms used during
Sephardic holidays and life
cycle events.
The whole family can real-
ly get involved in "Sephardic
Journeys," an interactive
display at the Family Educa-
tion Pavilion, where visitors
will learn about the countries
where Sephardim sought
refuge 500 years ago.
The ASF has also announc-
ed that, with the cooperation
of the Quincentennial Foun-
dation of Istanbul, the fair
will include a photographic
and videotape exhibit on the
Jews of Turkey from the
Judah L. Magnes Museum.
Also scheduled for display is
"Jewish Roots in Spain," a
photographic history of the
Jews of Spain sponsored by
Iberia Airlines.
Three Sephardic concerts
are planned, featuring Joe
Amar and the authentic
Ladino music of Los Pasaros,
from Turkey, both accom-
panied by the Shlomo
Rabinovitz Orchestra.
Two seminars on Sephardic
education will be held.
"Issues in Sephardic Educa-
tion" and "Teaching a
Sephardic Curriculum" will
address a variety of issues
and resources.
For those planning to at-
tend the fair, educational
seminars, and convention,
discounted airfares to Los
Angeles are available
through Netfare, by calling
(800) 356-1146.
For information or registra-
tion materials, contact the
ASF National Office in New
York at (212) 308-3455; or the
convention office in Los
Angeles, (213) 298-5476.
