Rabbi Ephraim Kanar- fogel, spiritual leader of Cong. Beth Aaron in Teaneck,N.J., notes, first of all, that eating on erev Yom Kippur is a mitzvah. "Indeed," Rabbi Kanarfogel comments, "the Talmud de- rives, from a verse in Leviticus, that the mitzvah of eating on the ninth of Tishri, erev Yom Kippur, is akin to fasting on the 10th of Tishri. Our sages tell us that we can even reduce our per- formance of mitzvot such as learning Torah on erev Yom Kippur in order to fulfill the mitzvah of eating." By tradition, Rabbi Kanar- fogel says, the pre-fast meal is a fleishig one, and the custom is to eat chicken. "Our sages tell us to eat foods on erev Yom Kippur that are easily digested," Rabbi Kanarfogel adds. "That's true for a number of reasons. First, we want to be comfortable on Yom Kippur, so that we can concentrate on our davening, and also, we want to avoid a bloated feeling because it can lead to the type of haughtiness that is the antithesis of what Yom Kippur is all about." Rabbi Kanarfogel stresses that people who question whether their health per- mits them to fast should not make the decision on their own, but should consult their rabbis, who will decide using input from the per- son's physician. "The fast is very important," Rabbi Kanarfogel observes, "but it is not meant to bring harm to people. At the same time, if one is permitted to fast, he should do so, even if he can't spend every moment in shul, and even if, for example, he has to lie down in order to complete the fast." Eat frequent, smaller meals on erev Yom Kippur, rather than just one very large meal immediately before the fast, advises Azriel Haimowitz, a car- diologist in New York. A very large meal right before the fast would "rev up the endocrine system" in the short run, but produce a "nadir" later on, he ex- plains, and "you'll be starv- ing around 3 p.m. on Yom Kippur." Dr. Haimowitz recommends a large intake of "carbohydrates like pasta" on erev Yom Kippur. "Drink a lot of fluids," he suggests, and "avoid salty foods." Both Dr. Haimowitz and Steven Schuss, a pediatrician, discourage a large intake of sweetened drinks, such as soda, on erev Yom Kippur. "Soda will make you thirsty later on," Dr. Schuss says. Simple sugars should be avoided, Dr. Haimowitz adds. "Loading up on candy bars before the fast is not a good idea," he says. As an added precaution, he urges older people who are prone to dehydration not to rise abruptly from a sitting or lying position while they are fasting. Dr. Schuss adds two fur- ther bits of advice. First, people who generally con- sume a large amount of caf- feine should begin gradually reducing the intake at least a week before the fast. "A sudden caffeine withdrawal on Yom Kippur can lead to headaches and extreme discomfort," Dr. Schuss warns. • In addition, Dr. Schuss urges children to heed the halachic stricture against fasting at too young an age. "Don't do it (fast) if you don't have to," he cautions. "The negative effects of fasting if your body isn't ready for it can include dehydration and chemical imbalances." Rabbi Kanarfogel cites a custom to eat kreplach on erev Yom Kippur. The meat inside the kreplach sym- bolizes the Almighty's at- tribute of strict justice, Rabbi Kanarfogel explains, and the dough around the meat symbolizes the enveloping of that aspect of the Almighty by the quality of mercy. "That's what we pray for on Yom Kippur," Rabbi Kanarfogel concludes "for God's mercy to prevail over the strict letter of the law." ❑ New Jersey Standard K
