t's not your ordinary kind
of sports bar . . . In fact,
you wouldn't even think it
was one . . . and if considered
as such, Mr. B's Bloomfield
has to be among the classiest-
looking yet.
The former Confetti's site
on Orchard Lake Road, just
south of Maple in West
Bloomfield, is beyond recogni-
tion from its previous occu-
pant at this prime location
. . . A total gut job was done
here and probably the only
things left from the former te-
nant is a toaster and dish-
washing area in the new
kitchen.
Even the front facade has
been changed . . . Owners
Mike Nash, Martin Tuch-
man, Ralph Gustafson and
Rob Jackier found the
building's original cor-
nerstone of 1954 and from
there re-did the entire
structure.
Mr. B's Bloomfield is run by
working partners Holli Day,
daytime; and Randy Banish,
evenings . . . Randy was
formerly chef at Picano's in
Troy and chef/owner of
Roman Tavern in Rochester,
formerly Leno's.
The three-quarters of a
million dollars worth of sheer
beauty seats 225 including a
bar area with two booths,
three tables and stools that
make up another 40.
It's a fun restaurant . . .
with game area for children
(or adults who at times pro-
bably would like to use the
W.C. Fields phrase, "Get lost,
kid!" when it comes to the
pinball machines and video
games).
On the Mr. B's Bloomfield
walls are murals of old cars,
old-time comics (Laurel and
Hardy, Three Stooges,
Charlie Chaplin), Marilyn
Monroe, painting of Elvis
Presley, etc., even a French
horn and mammoth
moosehead.
and
brass
There's
mahogany everywhere at the
Mr. B's Bloomfield . . . Brass
railings, brass rods, brass
booth lamps, tiled floors and
carpeting . . . On entering,
beautiful neon lights in
orange, purple and green are
surrounded by a checkered
design, green striping, taupe
striping and a three-layer
cove ceiling . . . A nostalgic
jukebox looks like an old
Wurlitzer but plays new-

fangled compact discs rather
than the regular records.
Waitpersons like Shari
Dorsey like to smile and put
emphasis on comfort service,
which is among the Mr. B's
trademarks to go along with
their highly diversified
menus.
Lisa Banish, Randy's wife,
is floor supervisor at Mr. B's
Bloomfield some days and
some evenings . . . Mike or
Rob are there almost every
evening . . . Martin is at the
Rochester location most of the
time . . . and plus being one of
the owners, Ralph Gustafson
also operates the Royal Oak
Mr. B's.
This is number five in the
growing Mr. B's chain .. .
Number six, expected to be
open by November of this
year at the former Southfield
Charley's on 12 Mile, just east
of Evergreen, will be similar
to Mr. B's Bloomfield with a
lot of fresh fish specials to go
along with its large menu .. .
Seating will be over 200 plus
downstairs private banquet
facilities with a separate kit-
chen . . . This is an area
which was never properly
utilized after Sussex House
. .. and it is hoped Mr B's will
take full advantage of the
space . . . Plans are also for a
complete deck to be built out-
side next spring with seating
for 200.
Working partner at the
sixth Mr. B's will be Rob
Banish, Randy's brother cur-
rently working at Monterrey,
their Mexican restaurant in
Royal Oak, plus doing kosher
catering with Paul Kohn at
Quality Kosher Catering.
Also in the works is still
another location in downtown
Farmington, expected to open
next April, perhaps combin-
ing the best of Mr. B's and
their Monterrey restaurants.
The first Mr. B's on Main
Street in downtown Rochester
was formerly a shot-and-a-
beer operation that sat 60 and
has expanded three times to
its present 410 seating .. .
Number two was also on
Main Street, but in Royal
Oak, and seats just under 400
. . . The third Mr. B's opera-
tion, called Mr. B's Farm, was
previously a goat farm on
Novi Road and has a softball
diamond in the rear . . .
Number four on Rochester
Road, Troy, opened May 15 of
last year.
Although Rob Jackier, one
of the owners, is a former deli
man, he doesn't want to com-
pete with others . . . saying

,

that there are too many good
delis in the area . . . What a
lot of folks don't know is that
this really isn't a new venture
for Rob . . . He was involved
with Mr. B's 10 months from
January 1986, working both
the Rochester store and his
Plaza Deli in Southfield .. .
When he entered into a
management agreement with
Matt Prentice in September
1989, Rob was able to devote
full time to Mr. B's.
The art deco-look but slight-
ly dingy Confetti's of before
has undergone a magic-like
transformation . . . Long win-
dows in front face Orchard
Lake Road (I don't recall Con-
fetti's having windows) and a
place outside is for people to

Bloomfield site.

sit on benches and rest when
weather permits . . . Mr. B's
Bloomfield is much more a
fun dining spot than a sup-
posed sports bar . . . Its
turkeyburgers are a big hit
and among almost 100 items
on the big menu, including a
lot of fish and heart-healthy
items.
There doesn't look to be
much parking at Mr. B's
Bloomfield, but a large lot is
in the back ... Complimen-
tary valet parking, if desired,
is every evening.
Mr. B's Bloomfield opened
its doors to the public on May
23 of this year and has seen
very little letup since . . .
Usually, when a place first
opens the newness itself will
create business . . . But then
the restaurant is on its own
. . . Mr. B's Bloomfield has a
casual concept to go with its
good menu and customer
devotion that has promoted
much returning interest from
its first-time curiosity atten-
dance . . . Hard, dedicated
work will do this . . . All the
Mr. B's operations thrive on
it.
A BASEBALL game with
about 50 outfielders? . . .
Come on now, who's kidding
who? . . . Well, it looked like
that many anyhow at the re-
cent second annual Labor
Day outing by Irene and Nate
Light for family and friends
in Camp Nehelu.
Lots of baseball, volleyball,
fishing, boating, etc, as 138
