They had several offers. But Norton was hesitant to place the tape where it might be one of thousands. So Scott encouraged his father to take charge of the business end of his career. Several weeks ago, Norton returned from Los Angeles with the production com- pany contract in hand. Though Norton's leanings are toward business and Scott prefers the creative side of music, the two work- ed together on the final recording sessions of the demonstration tape. Norton is an unabashed Scott Stern fan, tapping his toes with the faster-paced songs and pronouncing Scott's "When I Was Three" ballad "a great, great song." But he knows well that a father's sentiments — or even talent — do not sell a record. "It doesn't matter how good the tape is if you don't know how to get from point A to point B," Norton says. "There are 100 good singers in every city. To make it, you have to know how to be a salesman." And even then a singer's success is precarious, he adds. "Nobody knows whether a record will sell — not the record companies, not the producers." Though the two men are optimistic Scott can find success as a singer, being a rock-and-roll legend is not at the top of Scott's agenda. His real dream, he says, is becoming a respected com- poser. Scott approaches compos- ing the way a writer ap- proaches a book, he says. As he writes, he can clearly imagine the sound each in- strument will make. "Just like a character in a book has specific qualities, I know the violin," he says. "I know what it can do; I know its range and speed. It's almost like another language, and I know the language of music." Lyrics are more difficult. "I always write the music first — sometimes it just takes 10 minutes; then the words will take me months. A fan of Brahms and Mahler, Theolonius Monk and Peter Gabriel, Scott dreams one day of having his own studio. "But at the same time I'm realistic," he says. "If all this doesn't work out, I'll find something else to do for a living. But music will always be my first pas- sion." ❑ ORIENTAL 111 and 1 - CONTINENTAL CUISINE .7 II Same Location Over 18 Years Discover Bar-B-Q Beef Ribs 20% Lunch Off Entire Check or Dinner Orders Accepted For Your Break-The-Fast-Tray Our Dairy Tray • Nova Lox • Chubs • Tuna Salad • American, Swiss, Cream and Cottage Cheeses • Tomato, • Onion • Cucumber • Crudites and Olives • Egg Salad or Hard-Boiled Eggs • Bagels, Kaiser Rolls and Onion Rolls • Fresh Fruit In A Watermelon Basket • Homemade Sour Cream Coffee Cake $975 per person • Dine In Only • Lobster Excluded • Not Valid With Other Promotions • 15% Gratuity Added to Complete Check Offer Good Tuesday Thru Thursday L Expires 9-19-91 JN • Since 1939 Ama‘ West Bloomfield Oak Park Bingham Farms 737-3890 967-3999 645-5288 871-1590 7618 Woodward Ave. SPECIAL QUALITY PARTIES UP TO 200 Specializing In: Bar Mitzvahs, Sweet 16's, Showers, Anniversaries, Retirement Parties, Birthdays, Weddings, Etc.
