The S.H. and Helen R.
Scheuer Foundation of New
York has awarded a grant to
the Cantors Assembly to per-
mit the expansion of its Baal.
Tefila training program for
lay prayer leaders from coast
to coast.
The program was launched
last year by the Cantors
Assembly to meet the grow-
ing need for qualified baaley
tefilah — lay prayer leaders
who conduct those portions of
the services at which the can-
tor generally does not of-
ficiate. Special Baal Tefila In-
stitutes were held at the
Assembly's annual conven-
tions in 1990 and earlier this
year, at which Hazzan Pin-
chas Spiro of Tefereth Israel
Synagogue, Des Moines, Iowa,
conducted sessions on the
weekday Shahharit service,
p'sukei dezimra and Minhha
for Sabbath and the
Shahharit services for Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
As a result of the new
grant, training programs will
be offered this fall in Califor-
nia and in the Baltimore-
Washington area.
Decrying "the dearth in to-
day's synagogues of the old
experienced prayer-leader,"
Hazzan Samuel Rosenbaum
of Rochester, N.Y., executive
vice president of the Cantors
Assembly, said: "The Baal
Tefila program is designed to
enhance the skills of lay per-
sons who may be called upon
to lead various portions of the
service or who may wish to do
so in observance of a yahrzeit
or other personal occasion.
This program seeks to
preserve the authentic
nusahot (prayer modes) from
different traditions and to in-
struct a new generation of
trained and qualified persons
to lead those portions of the
service at which the hazzan
generally does not officiate.
"We are grateful to the
Scheuer Foundation for the
generous grant that will
enable us to expand the Baal
Tefila Institute and permit in-
dividual cantors to conduct
their own mini-institutes for
members of their respective
congregations."
