Paper Paradise
At Center Galleries
"Shangri-La," a temporary
installation by New Yorker
Kurt Novak will open the
Center Galleries 1991-92 ex-
hibition season. Fabricated
from paper, poster paint and
tape and completely filling
two galleries, "Shangri-La"
will debut with a reception
from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 13.
Known for his labor-
intensive, but impermanent
paper installations, Mr.
Novak has worked for three
weeks on the creation of this
mythical Shangri-La for
Detroit and the Center
Galleries. Mr. Novak's in-
stallations are always
specifically designed for a
location, context or time of
year.
A self-produced audio tape
sound track will accompany
Mr. Novak's multi-media
mythical paradise.
Mr. Novak, born and raised
in Detroit, attended Wayne
State University before his
move to New York in 1982
where he created several tem-
porary installations and ex-
hibited small-scale sculptures
and wall reliefs.
"Shangri-La" will be on ex-
hibit until Oct. 27. Center
Galleries is located at Wood-
ward Avenue and Kirby
Street inside the Park
Shelton Building. Exhibitions
are open to the public and ad-
mission is free.
Gallery hours are: Tuesday-
Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Satur-
day and Sunday 10 a.m.-4
p.m.
