the idea takes hold, and large
numbers of non-Arab
Moslems get to know Israel at
first hand, a new and fresh at-
mosphere of international
understanding may be
created.
There is an additional
sideline. It is no secret that a
certain number of wealthy
Moslems, Arabs among them,
surreptitiously come to Israel
for medical treatment. In-
auguration of Islamic Tours
on a formal and official basis
could well serve to encourage
medical tourism as well.
Serious discussions are now
under way with two world-
renowned Israeli hospitals.
Who is Meir Kaplan? He
was born in New York, the
son of Dr. Yehiel Kaplan, who
for some years was head of the
Teachers' Seminary at the
Yitzhak Elhanan Yeshiva.
Already holding degrees in
philosophy, Meir was award-
ed a scholarship by the
Zionist Organization of
America to study at the
Hebrew University, and came
to Israel in 1948. By a strange
combination of circumstances
he became connected with the
Israel Police Department, and
went back to the U.S. for a
while to study criminology
and acquire special training
in application of science to
police research. He establish-
ed the police R & D section,
and for more than 20 years,
until his retirement, served
as head of the Criminal In-
vestigation unit.
Retirement? He is deeply
involved in his new career —
in the Moslem tourist
business. ❑
