Jewish Heritage Tours
To South America
New York — In cooperation
with Varig Brazilian Airlines,
Grand Prix Journeys has in-
troduced "Journeys to Jewish
Heritage" in South America
— a 13-day "core" tour that
visits Jewish institutions and
joins in everyday Jewish life
in Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo
and Rio de Janeiro, and four
shorter packages in Brazil
that can be added, in Bahia,
Manaus, Ouro Preto and the
"Jewish guacho" region, Rio
Grande do Sul.
In support of the program,
Varig has produced a
22-minute video, a 24-page
Jewish Traveler's Guide to
South America, and a calen-
dar/diary that records every
Jewish holiday and festival.
The program commemorates
500 years of Jewish life in the
Americas, and provides many
opportunities en route to
meet and talk to Jewish
leaders and members of local
congregations and clubs.
General sightseeing in each
city and dining and entertain-
ment in the traditional styles
of Argentina and Brazil are
also included, and the main
tour spends a day at Iguassu
Falls. Departures are schedul-
ed every two weeks.
From the outset, the tour
blends visits to outstanding
centers of Jewish history,
culture, public service and
religion with chances to
observe and to participate in
the everyday life of the Jewish
communities. Among other
sights, it visits the Jewish
Museum and Grand
Synagogue in Buenos Aires,
Albert Einstein Hospital and
Jewish Home for the Elderly
in Sao Paulo, the Grand
Synagogue and Jewish
Federation in Rio — but it
gives plenty of time, for exam-
ple, to Buenos Aires' Once
district, its kosher butchers,
shops, restaurants and
Sholem Aleichem schools for
young children's Jewish
studies, and to the Bom
Retiro district in Sao Paulo,
where the first Jews from cen-
tral and eastern Europe
settled.
At the Club Hebraica — ex-
tensive sports, entertainment
and education centers in both
Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo
— tour visitors mingle and
lunch with locals; they join
the congregation for Sabbath
services at the Temple Beth
El in Buenos Aires and at-
tend receptions with con-
gregations at Sao Paulo's
Temple C.I.P. and Rio's Tem-
ple A.R.I.; and they take a
kosher Sunday brunch at the
Bar Ilan School, the center of
Orthodox belief in Rio.
Extensions to Bahia and
Manuas are three-night, to
Ouro Preto and Rio Grande
do Sul, four-night. Each of
these places has its unique
Jewish element: the New
World's first synagogue was
built in 1558 in Taipa, near
Bahia; in Manaus, descen-
dants of the Sephardic Jews
from Morocco who settled
along the Amazon still speak
Chaiquitia, Moroccan Yid-
dish; Jewish settlers became
cowboys in the Rio Grande do
Sul; and in Ouro Preto, mar-
ranos, descendants of "con-
verted" Jews who practiced
their Judaism in secret, were
among the leaders of the
rebellion against Portuguese
rule.
Land-only price is $1,429 to
$1,744 per person, double oc-
cupancy, except for the
Christmas-New Year period,
This is a 13-day
tour - that visits
Jewish institutions
and joins in
everyday Jewish
life in South
America.
when the price is $1,569 to
$1,879, and during Carnival,
when it is $1,599 to $2,149.
Prices cover deluxe or first-
class hotels, full breakfast
daily, 10 other meals — six
lunches and two dinners,
privately hosted, with Jewish
congregations, and two
dinner-and-show evenings —
all sightseeing, transfers, ser-
vices charges, taxes and tips.
A full glass kosher meal plan
— breakfast, lunch and din-
ner daily — can be
substituted for an additional
$699 per person. Varig
gateways are Miami, New
York, Toronto, Chicago, San
Francisco and Los Angeles;
special add-on-air fares are
available from cities
throughout the U.S. and
Canada. An 11-day version of
the tour, omitting Sao Paulo,
costs $829 to $1,079
