ANNOUNCING HEBREW FOR THE

example of self-sacrifice, in
doing the right thing and
following the example of
Moses' dedication and love of
God.
Shabbat Shuvah, the Sab-
bath of repentance, means not
only repentance but also
return. The Jew returns
because he wishes earnestly
to repent and render an ac-
count to God for his spiritual
life and to ask God's mercy for
the coming year. The Sabbath
of Return bids us return to
the basic goals of personal
Judaism through repentance.
To return to personal
Judaism, we need to recall
that man has been put on
Earth for a purpose: to serve
God, to serve mankind, to
follow the ways and the laws
of mitzvot in order that man
may "help perfect the
universe under the sov-
ereignty of God."
Theologically speaking,
Judaism speaks of the condi-
tion of man's existence. Man
has a choice; man is not a
mere automaton at the mer-
cy of a mechanistic God mov-
ing forces beyond the control
of nature or human nature.
Man has a role to play in
perfecting the world. Man is
a partner of God in building
a better society on Earth. It's
not up to chance but to choice.
Man has a choice between
right and wrong. Shuvah,
repentance, connotes a feeling
of penitence over misdeeds
that calls for a return through
a change of heart in the in-
dividual. Turn away from
your past ways! Act anew!
Return and repent and thus
find a way to personal
Judaism! ❑
