• Earlier this week, Rep.
Bonior announced he was in
favor of delaying the vote on
loan guarantees. His
spokesman added, however,
that Mr. Bonior is "still ex-
amining the issue" and
would be discussing it
throughout the week with
colleagues.
Other Michigan represen-
tatives could not be reached
for comment.
David Gad-Harf, executive
director of the JCCouncil,
called the President's pro-
posal "a poor idea" for both
political and humanitarian
reasons.
The proposal "fails to re-
spond to the critical human-
itarian needs in Israel, espe-
cially at a time when Israel
is expecting an influx of
Jews from the Soviet
Union," he said. Additional-
ly, it "sends a message to the
Arab nations that they can
continue to press the U.S.
and get concessions from
Israel even before the nego-
tiating process commences."
Sen. Levin's comment that
the majority of the Senate
will not oppose the loan
guarantees followed a
meeting Tuesday of leading
Democratic and Republican
senators to discuss President
Bush's proposal.
After the meeting, Senate
Majority Leader George
Mitchell, D-Maine, issued a
statement that the senators
"haven't made a decision"
regarding the loan guar-
antees, but "I don't favor
this whole concept of
linkage," saying human-

Holds Celebration

Ann Arbor's Apples and
Honey and Lots, Lots More, a
celebration of the High Holy
Days, will be held 1-4 p.m.
Sept. 15 at the Jewish Corn-
munity Center of Washtenaw
County in Ann Arbor.
An afternoon of cultural, in-
formative and entertaining
activities designed to enrich
Jewish life, offers something
for all ages and backgrounds.
Young children will make
and blow their very own
shofars, fashioned on site, and
enjoy arts and crafts in-
cluding making napkin rings
and challah covers.
Teens, ages 11 and up, will

be challenged with a treasure
hunt on the JCC grounds and
can participate in games.
Adults will hear the
"Reflections and New Begin-
nings" program, featuring
brief speeches by localites in-
cluding State Senator Lana
Pollack.
Apples and Honey is a joint
effort of the Jewish Com-
munity Center, Beth Israel
Congregation, Temple Beth
Emeth, Chabad House,
Hebrew Day School, the
Jewish Cultural Society, ORT,
