At the outbreak of the war,
the U.S. first tried to supply
Israel an outdated version of
the Patriot missile which
could defend against war-
planes but not missiles .. .
As the war progressed,
American-led forces con-
sistently attempted to renege
on the promise to keep the
pressure up on Saddam's
missile sights. Only repeated
threats of independent action
by Israel against Iraq con-
vinced an annoyed American
command to reassign forces
back to this task.
Since the war's end, the
U.S. has devoted much energy
into rehabilitating the image
of the terrorist-supporting
Syrians and once again is tur-
ning a blind eye to a heavy
military build up being

want to inspire young
leadership in metropolitan
Detroit.
So they have added a new
study area to the fall roster
— the political action track.
As part of the program,
students will be matched up
with lay leaders in a mentor
program within the Jewish
community.
When fall classes begin on
Sunday, students will be
asked to consider the pro-
gram, which will enhance
some of the courses already
provided, said Community
Jewish High School Prin-
cipal Judy Loebl.
Students are enrolled in
one of three tracks — com-
munity service, designed to
get students involved in the
Jewish community; creative
arts, which provides hands-
on opportunities to learn
about Jewish culture and
traditions through art; and
performing arts, in which
students write and perform
vignettes on contemporary
Jewish life.
Political action will focus
on first-hand experience in
the political process, Mrs.
Loebl said.
"We want to get kids in-
volved in the community at
a younger age so we have
leadership," Mrs. Loebl said.
"It is important that they

understand that all issues
affect the Jewish commun-
ity."
Last fall, Community High
School unveiled its first po-
litical- course, which came
about after the school sent a
delegation to Panim El
Panim, an ongoing high
school workshop in Wash-
ington, D.C.
In the class, Jewish Polit-
ical Tradition — Jews In
American Politics, students
listened to speakers like
Sen. Jack Faxon, Jewish
Community Council repre-
sentative Miriam Imerman
and Richard Lobenthal,
Michigan regional director
for the Anti-Defamation
League.
"The idea has been evolv-
ing," Mrs. Loebl said.
"When I came into this job,
it was important to me to
focus on political
awareness."
Last year's political tradi-
tion course attracted 15
students. Enrollment still is
under way for the fall
semester. Officials said they
will publicize the new track
extensively after the
semester begins. The first
year, just a few students are
expected to enroll.
"Anything that we can do
that brings more knowledge
is good," Mrs. Loebl said.
"Anything that we can turn
kids on with works.
"We are catching up with
the times," Mrs. Loebl said.
"We are moving into the
21st century." 0
