Booda Products, Inc., a Gardena, Calif.-based company which entered the pet market with covered litter boxes for cats about 20 years ago, now makes Wonder Tugs, heavy duty cotton rings with rubber grip handles for a friendly game of tug-of-war be- tween owners and their dogs; two- sided tugs (for owners with a pair of pooches); and natural cotton bones which act as dental floss for dogs. The suggested retail price for the Booda tugs is $10 to $20; for the bones, $7 to $15. And to satisfy the hunger they work up while watching their videos and exercising, dogs and cats can munch on gourmet treats, like the ones sold by L. Coffey Ltd., based in Minne- apolis. Linda Coffey founded the company in 1982, one of the first in the gourmet pet food field. Except for 1990, Ms. Coffey says company sales have doubled every year. L. Coffey Ltd.'s initial product was a gourmet dog biscuit concocted of stone-ground whole wheat, corn meal, Romano cheese and (the secret ingredient!) a clove or two of garlic. Ms. Coffey had created the biscuit for her own two dogs; when they gave it four stars, Ms. Coffey, a former clothing designer/buyer, began marketing them in the Midwest. Ms. Payne, of Pet Business, says that the biscuits sold by L. Coffey Ltd. re- flect rising public interest in health foods. She observes, "People's interest in their own health has carried over to their pets." In response to the booming cat market, L. Coffey Ltd. now imports fish-shaped cat treats from England. A 24-ounce jar of either Haute Feline or Haute Canine treats sells for $29.50. The company has branched out beyond gourmet treats and now also makes bow ties and bandanna collars for dogs, mink catnip mice for cats, and natural wooden grooming brushes.
