recall old-time two-seaters that are
gone but not forgotten. Most of these
vintage sports cars from the Fifties,
:::.; Sixties and Seventies were roadsters:
Austin-Healeys, MG's, Sunbeam
Alpines and TriumphTR models. The
MG (born in the '50s, died in 1980)
is considered the most successful
sports car ever made.
Some sports cars passed on be-
cause their market reached middle
age, with families and responsibilities.
A groovy grandmother who once
owned a two-seater says, "I had to get
a sports car out of my system. Now
I'm driving a Toyota Cressida."
It's been years since Ford produced
some of the niftiest two-seaters ever.
The company started with the 1955
Thunderbird, priced at $2950. Then
there was the stainless steel-bodied,
• gull-winged DeLorean, a handsome
dude like its creator.
You have to visit the car museums
to see earlier classics, like the Stutz
Bearcat and the Auburn Boat Tail
• Speedster, which had a little door at

Some sports cars are not two-

seaters, but 2+2's, with seating space
on a small back bench. These include
the new Mercury Capri; Porsche 911,
928 and one model of the 944 S2;
Jaguar XJ-S; Hyundai Scoupe; Mitsu-
bishi 3000 GT and Eclipse; and some
models of the Nissan 300 ZX line.
Not all two-seaters succeeded in the
marketplace. Critics said Pontiac's
• sharp-looking Fiero lacked the horses
to make it the sports car it appeared
to be. Buick's Reatta won't be back
in 1992 despite its jazzy looks and
fun-to-drive qualities. Critics blasted
the Ford EXP and its clone, the
Mercury LN7, as Escorts pretending
