non-skiing children are provided,
along with ski instruction for 3 years
old and up.
If you're in the mood to shop, you
will find a number of upscale stores:
Gorsuch's or Pepi's, for sportswear
and skiwear; The Squash Blossom, for
Indian jewelry and artifacts; This
Wicked West and Cabbages and
Kings, for funky clothing. Art galleries,
like Stuart-Buchanan and Lionshead
Gallery, are also popping up.
You can dress casually at even the
priciest restaurants. Recommended
are The Left Bank, with French
cuisine; Mirabelle's, a four-star
restaurant in the nearby resort of
Pepi's/Gastof
Creek;
Beaver

restaurant; and the Saloon, in nearby
Minton, an old western saloon.

Experience Utah

Utah is known for dry, powder
skiing and dependable conditions.
Some areas, like Snowbird, Utah,
receive an average annual snowfall of
500 inches of light, dry snow. Karen
Rouff, who skied Utah in Park City,
Deer Valley and Alta, recalls, "It was
a little more difficult skiing all powder,
and if you're not used to skiing in
powder, it's more difficult." David
Berent, a West Bloomfield dentist
who skis about four months every
winter, concurs that skiing in Utah is
more difficult, but says, "Snowbird
and Alta are excellent places to ski.
But they're for young, aggressive
skiers.
Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort,
owned by Richard D. Bass of Dallas,
opened in December 1971 in the
Little Cottonwood Canyon, 25 miles
southeast of Salt Lake City. It was
designed to meet critical environmen-
tal standards and its high-rise
buildings harmonize with the sur-
rounding mountains and forests.
Staying at Snowbird is a resort
experience, with three condominium
lodges or a large full-service hotel to
choose from. The Cliff Lodge, which
is the hotel and conference center,
offers ski in/ski out opportunities
Snowbird itself has 12 restaurants and
clubs, geared from gourmet dining to
kids' meals.
Unlike some ski resorts with
crowded facilities, Snowbird's current
skiing capacity far exceeds the
