calls for your best dressed look. This season, subtle is out; sizzling is in.
Dresses can be short or long. Best short: shoulder-baring slips, curvy fit-and-flares. Best long: slinky
columns. Black is big but so are metallics and eye-popping colors. Velvet is new when mixed with inserts
of another fabric. Tartan is everywhere — dresses, pleated skirts, long jackets.

THE FALL SOCIAL SEASON

GOLDEN GODDESS (above): Gold appears in a variety of materials, from suede and satin to lace and lycra. Donna Karan's
version of the evening suit is in gold sequins; jacket, $1195, skirt, $625, available through Saks Fifth Avenue. The elegant beaded
pouch is from Ceci's.

VELVET VENUS (right): Carolyne Roehm combines two new looks — the classic columnar shape and velvet with inserts. The
midnight blue velvet gown is swirled with chiffon, $1250 at Jacobson's. Accessories are faux antique bracelet, $85, from Presence II,
and gold and jade dangle earrings, $48, from Presence II.
